Excellent reaction, Harri .. Janis Ian perfectly expressed the sadness and frustration that is felt when you're not lucky enough to be part of the in-crowd .. Whether the reason is a perceived lack of looks, personality, talent, connections or something else, the sense of rejection and isolation would be devastating, particularly to a young person .. Great song.

Mentioning beauty, Harri, Janis was in her mid-twenties when she released this almost ten years after "Society's Child." But she was beautiful when she recorded that so I can only think that this is about the insecurities that teenagers have, even when there's no reason but we have to face the fact that some people have real reasons for feeling as though no one really likes them and its's not always something that they can grow out of. Some people can live their whole lives feeling isolated because people don't befriend them and that applies to all of us.
By the way, it was a big hit in the USA, which as you thought is her home country but it wasn't in the UK. In fact, the only other countries where it was a hit were Canada and Australia.
That's what I often complain about, chart positions and popularity are not a good measure of quality, many of the best songs you hear have never been appreciated by most people.
