The full story is that through tricking Wukong, the buddha made Wukong realize that there are meaningful things beyond power like wisdom.

As a limitless powerful being, Wukong realised he was intellectually limited and no amount of power could bring him fulfillment. Thus his own sense of limitation trapped him under a mountain he could have easily escaped from until he met the monk that started his journey to enlightenment.

This mirrors our own life when as a child we are limitless in our minds but one day meet the reality of our limitation. This is when we start our journey towards wisdom and truth.
