So sorry about your Dad, sweetheart. What a remarkable girl he raised!

I wish the biological parents had the same level of training 🤔

Hi Laura! I love your videos so much. I’m in my mid-twenties and work in advocacy/mental health for youth, but I really want to get started on trying to become a foster parent. I’d love if you talked sometime about ideas or advice for people like me. For instance: can you be a renter? Could you go to school? How are people in my field viewed as potential parents? Differently? Or better? How can I overcome reservations about my age or lack of a marital status?

I’m in Australia and I definitely agree with the part about interviewing different agencies. The government body for whom the agencies manage foster kids is dreadful, and half the agencies have been in a Four Corners episode. (That’s like our country’s investigative news / whistleblowing report). But some of them are okay and actually care about the children so try to find those ones in your area!

Took us like 5 months to get an information session. Then another 4 months before the actual training. Be prepared for none of the foster agencies to respond to you or to be organized in any way, shape, or form.

Going through this process now and I have to admit, I was really surprised at the level of screening that goes on. I'm thankful but wish all this happened before anyone became a parent. We just had our interview where they ask all these personal questions and it was rough. It brought back a lot. But I will do whatever needs doing to make a child safe.

As someone who's lost a parent young, I can feel your pain but I love the type of person you became with that

This is to the T my experience! We are in WA state and did state foster care. They also interviewed our children in private, and had to meet all animals in house and check they were up to date on vaccines.

Thank you so much for making these! I dream of becoming a foster parent one day and it means the world to me to have all these things shared in the way that you do

Omgosh I’m doing paper work for straight adoption right now which is basically the same as fostering paperwork. It’s SO MUCH! Doesn’t help that I’ve done multiple applications and still getting done with stage 1 rn after 6mo. Also having to wait on the government for some lost documents. So stressful I feel like we’ll never be able to grow our family.

Awe I love this, I would love to become a foster parent but unfortunately what holds me back is not having citizenship despite having lived in the states since I was 3. Hopefully some day

What kind of disabilities are you allowed to have and still be a foster parent? Mental illnesses, neurodivergence, some physical disabilities, are any allowed? And is it much harder to do so if you are not straight and cis?

I've spent all morning working on the forms. No joke.

I don't get it about the pool gate. In Australia you're not allowed to own a pool unless you have a gate with that criteria in the first place.

Can you talk about how fostering might work with permanent(adopted or biological) children in the home?

So my boyfriend and I (also a guy) would love to foster in the future. I'm worried about homophobia (as always), however, I'm more worried about the amount of kids who have issues with male caretakers. Would it be an issue to not have a female caretaker in the household? Would that affect our application or possible placements?
I realise you might not know the answers to these questions, but any insights would be greatly appreciated ❤

As someone who is interested in starting foster care in the next few years, what does it mean to interview different agencies?
