On July 20th 2024, the Bevy community came together to participate in the 5th official Bevy game jam. In this 9 day event, the goal is to make a game using Bevy, the free and open-source game engine built in Rust.

The Bevy Jam, similar to other jams, is a competition with winners as we'll see in a bit, but the more important priority is for everyone to have fun in a safe and collaborative space.

Bevy Jam 5 is a 9-day game jam that included two weekends and had 78 entries submitted. Today we'll be covering the top 10 game as determined by a community vote.

The theme for Bevy Jam 5 was `Cycles` which fits easily into one very popular genre: roguelikes, which no, I will not be sub-dividing into roguelikes and roguelites in this video. Consider yourself warned.

Haii creator of Orbital Incremental here I used num-bigint for the money/stardust, bevy_kira_audio for the audio (it was really easy to set up tracks for each of the planets, synchronise, and fade in), and also bevy_trauma_shake for the camera shaking when going supernova; didn't use anything else. I tried out all of the arbitrary number crates, in hindsight where I was planning to go with huge numbers didn't end up happening and I could have just used a 64 bit number and it would have been enough although if I had added in dwarf planets which you'd buy with black holes (they would reset after a supernova) then a 128 bit number would have been fine. I wasted a lot of time trying to get big ints and big floats when they just weren't necessary.

I don't have source code public, it's a bit of a mess, I only started learning Bevy the week prior to the jam, so there's a few different styles just trying things out. However I assume most people's jam entries have sub-par code quality, and I'm not on my own.

Wow, impressive that people reached this outcome in such a short amount of time!
