I like your idea. My dad and I made a heater for our pool ~25 yrs ago, using a barrel and copper pipe coiled around with fire inside (partially buried). What I’ve heard works well is if you use very long black hoses and make sure they’re in the sun, every 1/2-1hr empty it into the pool adding the sun heated water

Parents of a friend of mine built their own whirlpool from scratch, they used a big barrel with copper tubing heated by burning wood to heat up the water.

Lowering the burner flame and plugging the will fix your burning thru problem. Allowing the inlet water to pass around the outside then to the internal side will improve efficiency. But, assuming the volume of the pool and the limit of flow the 1/2" tubing can provide, it may be best to allow the interior and exterior coils, each, their separate paths to and from the pool. The outlet of the coil should rise 6" above the coil before returning to the pool. My $0.02.
