Hope you enjoy The Only Good Indians, Mike. It definitely is divisive (I think mostly because of the writing style) but people who like it LOVE it.

“We sold our Souls” by Grady Hendrix was a fun read similar to Best Friend. And it will give you some great Rock and Roll vibes. “My Heart is a chainsaw” by Jones has great Final Girl vibes. 😊

I picked up Summer of Night on impulse to read before the end of October and I'm really digging his writing style and world-building. Will definitely plan to read The Terror and sequels to this one very soon!

Stolen tongues is genuinely scary. It made me nervous to take my dog outside at night.

For the only good Indians, it’s not that there is a twist, what I find is it’s his writing style that is hit or miss. I love it, it has a noticeable dialect to it, but I can understand why it may be hard for others to read.

Hey Mike. I haven't read that much horror, but I will check and see what a few of those are like. I did want to let you know, that today I started reading while listening to Blackwater, oh my gosh, you were right. It is something. I feel like fantasy just slammed into historical fiction mixed together with the coming of age theme. Also, it's ironic that this story takes place about 2 and a half hours away from Union Town Alabama, where my grandfather and his three brothers are from. Also, it started the Easter before my grandmother was born. I love coming of age stories where science and magic can collide. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thank you for turning me on to Nick Cutter! Read ‘The Troop’ a couple weeks ago and it was spectacular! Will def be reading more from him

I listened to Stolen Tongues on audio. The first chapter or prologue (can’t remember which it was) terrified me and I had to listen to it in chunks. The rest wasn’t quite so scary but it was really good! There’s nothing like a horror book on audio, literally someone just telling you a scary story like you’re around a campfire in the woods. The best!

I am reading Stephen Graham Jones’s I Was A Teenage Slasher, and it is his prose and very subtle humor that hooked me!! I loved the teen’s voice from the very first page!

My plan is finishing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and then read more King books and I have two boxes of them

I'm currently reading Lost Man's Lane! It's set in the author's Indiana hometown (where I've also spent half my life) and is full of 90s nostalgia.

For a recommendation, Darcy Coates' From Below. It's unlike her other novels and follows a group diving to a sunken ship to film a documentary, but it also follows a second timeline explaining how the ship sank. Truly the perfect horror for anyone frightened by the depths of the ocean!

Mike, October Society by Christopher Robertson are great short story collections reminiscent of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Kids gather around a campfire for Halloween and tell stories. There are 3 volumes of October Society. Very creative horror stories that gave me serious goosebumps. Cheap on kindle. I think $2.99 or $3.99. Well worth the time and price.

I read Black Mouth a few weeks ago. Good coming of age story, I think you'll like it.

You might check out The Hollow Kind by Andy Davison if you like southern gothic with family drama involved and discovery of old secrets like you mentioned.

Also, I liked Stephen Graham Jones’ “My Heart is a Chainsaw.” The main character is like a conglomerate of horror movie and media. Lots of references about our favorite horror movies as kids (we’re the same age, brother 😉).

I loved black water when I read it in the 80s. I’m going to reread this year. The elementals is quite good as well. The troop was serious body horror.

I enjoyed the characters in Lost Man's Lane. I think this one will resonate with you.
Black Mouth I thought was good. It's a horror this time, lol-- I see a little Wicked This Way Comes vibe from it, too. I think you'll see why when you get there
