Not a book, but a short story Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is absolutely horrifying. I read it, thought about it, and cannot forget it.

Idk why but out of nowhere I just want to read books. I never read normally...💀

You know the older I get, the more I’ve realized reading horror novels is alway about trying to recapture the chills Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark gave me as a kid.

William Peter Blatty´s "The Exorcist" is even more scary than the movie itself...

I read The Exorcist while living alone. I would read it in bed but then I'd have to remove the book from the room entirely before I could fall asleep.

I read pet semetary as a father of 2 young kids, a few months after I lost my mother suddenly. It brought me to tears multiple times, but I believe it helped me understand grief better in a way!

I think something IT does really well is highlight the sheer uncanniness of what's happening, especially in the scene where Georgie first meets Pennywise. Because the way it's described is casual and matter of fact it kinda hits you with this double tale effect. Like, did I really read that. And it's legit chilling. Just the so not normal scenario being described in such a mundane way.

Read Dracula last year for the first time and I was impressed something like that was written so long ago. Loved the style also.

Don't read a lot of horror, but Poe's Cask of Amontilliado left a life-long impression on me. Also, Algernon Blackwood's The Wendigo.

It’s crazy that scary stories to tell in the dark was banned by a lot of places, I remember I bought those books in 3rd grade during a scholastic book fair in our elementary school library lol. BTW did you have those fairs at your school? They were so cool I got books, pencils, erasers, bookmarks and just random little toys during those.

As much as I love the Cthulhus and the Shoggoths, The Colour out of Space is, in my view, Lovecrafts best work. Excellent pick. And yes, Ray Bradbury continues to be one the absolute masters.

I reread Salem's Lot and IT once every year. These two novels are my all-time favorite King books.

Stephen King's It was my introduction to horror, and while it isn't my favorite of his (that would be The Stand), I liked it enough that it got me into the genre. I kept reading Stephen King, but I also branched out into other subgenres of horror, so the book will always hold a special place in my heart. I think what Stephen King does better than almost anything is making his characters feel real, which makes the horror they experience feel personal to the reader.

I read IT for the first time when I was living off-grid last year. I was 28 and that scene where Bev is drinking tea with that old lady gave me a nightmare that night. It was the first time a book has ever done that.

I don't know if it's classified as horror, but Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is terrifying in my opinion.

The next Shirley Jackson book you should read is "We Have Always Lived in the Castle".

pet semetary as a father hits different. one of the best examples of a consistent conflict in marriage / family life being utilized in horror.

Thank you for making an interesting list that wasn’t predictable. I’m excited to try some authors that will be new to me.
