Montauk or Nippon Daisy a great flower for fall color in white

Montauk also known as Nippon Daisies are one of the last perennials to bloom in fall. They have 3-4 inch flowers opening in September and October on taught, upright stems along with glossy/waxy foliage. They thrive in well drained soil and full sunshine. They do not have a very pleasant scent to most people, some would say they smell like tar. The plants are very long-lived, and trouble free.

This genus is made up of one species of perennials from the coastal regions of Japan. The crisp, white daisy-like blooms brighten the fall garden and the white is fantastic in the coloring landscape. Pollinators love these plants. Be sure to cut back in spring to keep plants looking their best.

For four years now, I have grown Montauk Daisies in my landscape. Yes, they are normally a full sun type of plant BUT down here in the South, it just gets way too hot for them verses the temps in the Northeast. So, for those in the South, it is BEST to grow them in dappled light.
Your bloom count may go down a bit... but the leaves will keep staying green and attractive.
Even the cool full sun in the morning MAY be too much for them... unless it is only about three hours of morning sun.
Lastly, YES... to get the best results, you may want to prune them back around late June to get them branching out better. If that is not done, then they have a tendency to put on too much terminal growth and then they flop outwards.
Otherwise a beautiful blooming plant for the Fall!

Are these hard to find? I mostly only see Shasta daisies at the local stores.
