I like your ideas Tim, , , We have farm operations on the go up North so We use tarp-straps better known as buggy-cords...
I tye notts on them to shorten or length'en-em depending on what 1 need them for, , , a bit bulky but they do the job, , , 1 heavy duty buggy-cord will hold a ton of weight and they last for 5 to 10 years sitting in the element's... short peaces of duct-tape and hay-wire can get a person out of a bind... We always use rigging that scratches the paint off the frames too help Our bikes look rad... a pretty bike comes with scraps and scuffs... lol Northern Canada Don

Great review! Some of the new stuff is pretty cool. My ghetto-scrounge version is my beloved Niterider, which is getting worn down, so that O-light is next, thanks for that! (YES I HATE micro USB'S!!!!) Front rack on the heavy mule touring bike is just an old Blackburn MTB rack mounted backwards, the single mount stay mounts to the top fender rack bolt, the lower two to the forks' axle brazes. I used an ice cream cooler basket for the basket, painted flat black. (steel, but relatively light) Inside the basket is a blaze orange open top tool bag that fell off a lineman's truck. It's duck canvas. For quick bar- mounts, I use round loops of old spandex, tie the ends together, parallell, with cool looking copper wire wraps. One is a vibration- brace for the NiteRider (the cheaper plastic mounts SUCK!!! Light will eject!!!) and my precious Jogger Fogger pepper spray is held on to the bars also with that . I can "quick release" the canister from the bars. It may tilt forward, (just tweak it back) but it's never shaken off. Took me four years to figure that one out. I know they make a plastic mount, but I'd break that instantly. If I have to deploy the spray, it's instant. I'm leery of plastic and rubber, rubber eventually degrades, but the spandex loop trick has never failed me. I lose them before that happens anyway. Yes, wear them on your wrist, in your hair etc. I used to have a REI purchased Planet Bike AAA powered blinky with all types of modes and it ended up sucking . Dead in two years. (So did their 25.00 front white light) Right now, for the rear red light, I'm "getting away " with a dollar store round AAA closet light glued to my helmet with some sliced pipe foam . While It doesn't blink, it's pretty bright and reliable, for a dollar. I put some red plastic over the lens and waterproofed it with electric tape. My helmet mirror has lasted 15 years and is from a women's hair brush from a dollar store, glued to a plastic coat hanger shaft with plumber's putty, the end is secured to the top of the visor with wrapped velcro on the shaft, then velcro on the visor, tensioned down with a couple zip ties. It will "break away" in a bad crash, no metal wire penetrating your skull. Oh and today I found a freaking STREAMLIGHT rechargeable lithium flashlight in the road. Quiet heavy, but OMG this thing is bright AF and insanely well made . $125.00 new. This will just be used for SHTF though lol.

I am an O-Light fan! Have been using their flashlights for a while with the bike/helmet mounts. Super bright / solid and just the right feature set. Very nice to have around when not on the bike too!

I have that Sunlite rack on my 91(ish) Stumpjumper by itself to keep my big handlebar bag off my front tire. Can't be beat for the price.

A small front rack is a good bit of bike gear. I bought a Nitto front rack that mounts on the canti bosses of my 90's mtb and it allows me to carry a few kilos of gear over the front wheel. It helps to make the bike more stable when Im off road on a camping trip as I found some years ago that having all the load on the back of the machine, can make the front light and skittish on rough trails. The addition of a small load on the front improves traction and the handling of the bike. That alu one you have does the job at a budget price, the Nitto is relativley expensive. Good review.

I tried a basket on a rear rack but I had to do some fancy ballet to get off the bike. To replace it I have 9" rise bmx bars with a small backpack slung from the cross bar. Absolutely not recommended in headwinds 🥵
