I try to ride with the perfect balance of light weight but still comfortable.

Excellent advice to go light as possible on the Divide. Adding that if you're an older cyclist touring the Divide, not racing, think about adding a rear rack with small panniers. Touring the route you'll cover 40-50 miles most days, often less in rough or steep sections. You might need to carry more food and water, and just frame bags can be difficult to fit that needed extra for some sections. I prefer extra water in panniers, or top of a rack instead of on my back.
