Divide whole numbers by unit fractions using a model
In this lesson you will learn to divide whole numbers by fractions using a model.
ADDITIONAL MATERIALS
STANDARDS
CCSS.5.NF.B.7.b Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 × (1/5) = 4.
TEKS.7.3.B apply and extend previous understandings of operations to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.
TEKS.6.3.E multiply and divide positive rational numbers fluently.
TEKS.5.3.J represent division of a unit fraction by a whole number and the division of a whole number by a unit fraction such as 1/3 ÷ 7 and 7 ÷ 1/3 using objects and pictorial models, including area models;
TEKS.6.3.A recognize that dividing by a rational number and multiplying by its reciprocal result in equivalent values;
IN.5.C.5 Use visual fraction models and numbers to multiply a fraction by a fraction or a whole number.
IN.5.C.7 Use visual fraction models and numbers to divide a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number and to divide a whole number by a unit fraction.
VA.CE.6.5.b solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers; and
VA.CE.6.5.a multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers;
In this lesson you will learn to divide whole numbers by fractions using a model.
