Imagine you owe six people a dollar each. You have fifty cent coins available to you. How many coins do you need to pay off everyone? Intuitively you might see that you need twelve coins. But to state the proof, when the method of payment is divided in halves, you need (6 / 1/2) coins to pay off the debt.

I remember this method as rote memory math. However, now that I am older I look at it and say 1/2 of 6 is 3. Why 12?

A terrible job of "teaching". But you did say how, not why. The understanding of the math is more important than finding the answer. What I mean is how many groups of 2s can you create from 6 -> 3; groups of 1s -> 6; and groups of 1/2s-> 12.
