Round of applause to the production team. The background is vibrant but not distracting, and Anna is still well lit in a bright warm light 👏🏼

I'm a therapist who uses ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, based on the idea that all emotions are valid and a natural part of the human condition. As such, we shouldn't try to avoid feeling what we feel and thinking what we think (but work it through defusion). The path to a more healthy and satisfactory life comes from the way we deal with what our minds gives us, which values we want for our lives and which actions we can take to uphold those same values. A lot of this comes across some of the positive psychology ideas, while also embracing the helplessness that precedes change.
ACT also comes from CBT's 3rd wave therapies.
I absolutely recommend the book "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy"

I really resonate with the learned helplessness theory. There are a lot of situations I could have solved with just a few spoken words, and I don't do it.

While I appreciate the work that Martin Seligman contributed to modern psychology and what he personally overcame. As an animal rescue volunteer, I still have a very visceral response to his experiments on dogs to prove his "Learned Helplessness" theory.

A lot of these concepts are also present in existential therapy. I also really like "The Happiness Trap" approach of ACT. I admittedly am less versed in positive psych, but I feel like it can have more risk of invalidation or focusing on trying to chase happiness. ACT examines happiness as a temporary state like any other emotion. It encourages us to expose ourselves enough to emotion that we see it cannot hurt us (this is much more complicated with higher triage symptoms but the principle is still used), so we can feel our feelings without avoiding or giving up. It also sees happiness as a fleeting emotion just like any other, encouraging us to both build a meaningful life but also seeing value and guidance in the flow of emotions.

That elephant example really broke my heart :( Sad humans do that to animals...

Meaning a purpose are the one we all want. No one wants to go to their grave unfulfilled.

I'm a fan of positive psychology now, as someone who wants to improve but is uncomfortable being "fixed."
I have to wonder how to avoid toxic positivity with this model though 🧐

"Positive psychology is toxic." That's got to be the battle cry of those who depend on psychology to support their never-ending assertions that it's everyone else's fault they're miserable.

It's your delivery that made me stay and listen. Your acknowledgment of toxic positivity and persuading us why positivity is still impactful was spot on. It's like you addressed our skepticism and then pointed us in the right direction. (Applause)

Everyone should have "The Power of Positive Parenting" by Glenn Latham in their library. It has a behavioral foundation and is very applicable. You will want to read it many times during your life. Cheers.

So glad you came across this guy, I have loved this point of view back when I just randomly came across it!

Definitely cool. For me, it's because I live with a toxic family member. Other than that, im pretty happy.

Positive Intelligence helped me personally, to learn the switch between negative and positive. It's all just a habit we've been training for a long time. Which is good news, as we can train something new as well. Mental Fitness is the skill o bridge the gap between knowing about choosing thoughts and actually doing it 🔥 I'd recommend PQ to anyone who wants to leave some of the conditioned heaviness behind. We got this!
