Buy OLED Now, or Wait For 2025 Monitors
Were already halfway through 2024 and its neigh impossible to get your mitts on the exact OLED monitor that you want, and with the possibility of much brighter and better OLEDs launching in 2025, should you really go through with refinancing your home to afford that shiny new QD or WOLED monitor when it becomes available, or should you just wait on the sidelines and let everyone else burn in their first generation products while you swoop in to get this alleged better 2025 model?

Well today I’m going to answer that question, because as someone who reviews these things for a living, I do have some perspective on where the industry is headed and what you might want to do.

Now let's first address these alleged 2025 models. I have heard some speculation that monitors will get much better in 2025, and with how unimpressive the HDR is on the first gen 2024 models many are hoping to see massive improvements to brightness to get that more impactful HDR experience, and while I can’t confirm such a thing will happen, what I can tell you is that many manufacturers are well aware of the demand for brighter OLEDs, and I personally do think its very likely you will see refreshed models with the ability to reach far more impressive numbers by next year.

But again… This is not confirmed.

Also there could be a chance you see some 4K 360Hz or 4K 480Hz monitors in 2024, but honestly I do think that will take more time, and likely the only other improvement would be more options with DisplayPort 2.1 assuming the RTX 50 series graphics cards from Nvidia use this new connection allowing you to avoid display stream compression issues like long alt tab times that we have on current models.

You may also see some glossy 4K WOLEDs which would be the best coating available likely as it would not suffer from magenta tinting like QD OLED, but I think this will depend on how well monitors like the XG27AQDMG sell, so I’ll have a link in the description if you want to check that out.

However even though all that sounds great, with nothing being confirmed at this point in time, I think it's worth considering that current 4K 240Hz OLEDs and 1440p 360Hz OLEDs are already absolutely fantastic, and many buyers will be more than happy with their purchase. Not to mention you can always buy a great monitor now and sell it next yera if you want to upgrade to an even better option.

Sure, current OLED monitors may lack the brightness of their TV counterparts, but they still have infinite contrast, near instant response times, and a lightning fast 240, 360, and even 480Hz, which makes them some of the clearest motion displays ever created, and if that's what you're after, then I do highly suggest picking up a 2024 OLED monitor, of which I’ll have my favorite ones listed in the description below.

So do I recommend you wait for 2025 models. No. I think you should buy the specific model you want this year, and wait to decide if you want to upgrade in the next 1 to even 5 years depending on how long you want to keep your monitor and what's available over the coming years.

As for me, I’m waiting for the gorilla glass version of LGs 4K panel launching later this year, but in the meantime, I’m using the excellent MSI MPG321URX 4K 240Hz QD OLED, and no matter what you choose, I’m sure you’ll be satisfied with whatever you do, or don’t decide to buy.

Life is too short to wait for next year models, with this line of thinkiing you'd never buy anything because there is always something bigger/better/cheaper just behind the corner

How freaking bright do you need it to be? I just got one of the MSI monitors and I feel like I need sunglasses to play games on it.

i really dont get your complaint about brightenss on these monitors. my eyes couldn't take much brighter in a heavy gaming session.

I have the Gigabyte FO32U2P and I'm extremely happy with it. It's reportedly slightly brighter than the ASUS, Dell and MSI equivalent QD-OLED panels and it has the DP 2.1 and mini DP 2.1 inputs. So more future proof ready for GPU's that don't need to use DSC. I normally play games in a light controlled room in the evening so the raised blacks in daylight don't bother me at all. Very happy so far and definitely recommend the FO32U2P.

I picked up one of the very first from LG 2 years ago. 2k 240hz, and it's wonderful. I'm anticipating that if 4k 240hz glossy, high brightness display comes out next year, I'll pick that up and use the other monitor as a secondary screen or if need be, sell it to help with the cost of buying a better one. Either way, it's a good investment.

Can you share a little more about the gorilla glass LG OLED coming later this year?

Is LG bringing out their own gorilla glas monitor or are you refering to the dough spectrum black 4K?

Sony needs to come out with a oled monitor

Is there a reason not to just buy an OLED TV for cheaper than all of the monitors? For example the 2023 Samsung QD OLED is currently only £999 versus OLED monitors usually being upwards of £1100

I want a 4K version of the LG 45 UltraGear, with slightly kess of a curve. Maybe 1000r instead of 800r.

Saying that the HDR for the current gen OLED monitors is crazy. The OLED monitors today are absoutely amazing and borderline felt like I was moving to next gen with how CLEAR the image is and practically non existent the motion blur is. I think most OLEDS are fine regardless of the generation it was released just as long as you take the necessary precautions to help prevent burn in on your monitor. Yes monitor technology is always going to get better in the future. But as a consumer you must first value your money before thinking of what OLED monitor you wanna choose. I got lucky to find an LG OLED monitor from micro center that was an Open box for about $460 which to me is well worth the price for a very premium Computer monitor instead of spending $800+ for a brand new monitor.

If you don't have an OLED, then yes you should upgrade this year. If you already have an OLED, then no you should wait

Now that some time has gone by, I really don’t get the hate for the AW 32 inch QD OLED. I came from the very dim LG 27 inch 240hz model but the AW seems plenty bright enough for me. Love the True Black 400 mode as it’s used the most.

The only displays available here are the LG C4 42" and the Samsung S90D 55" (55" uses the QD-OLED according to RTINGS). Which would you recommend? I've read the S90D has better colors but is it really that huge of a difference? Pricing for both is almost identical.

Are there going to be brighter OLED 4k 240Hz monitors coming next year?

All of the bright displays I see are TVs and they don't have DisplayPort 2;0 nor can do 4k 240Hz without DSC.

What I wanted to see is not only 100% adoption of HDMI 2.1 FRL 48, but also full adoption of DP2.1 over USB-C DP2.1 alt mode with full support of UHBR 10, 13.5, and 20. Also there shall be demand for 1080p OLED monitors as well targeting budget and esports pros, need WUXGA or DCI 2K (2048x1080) rated at 600Hz with VRR and LTPO layer as well as tandem OLED stacking for better power efficiency and higher sustained full screen brightness in both SDR and HDR, like going 600-1000 nits full screen, and longer lifespan with sub millisecond pixel dimming control. Maybe for higher resolutions, like why not adopt DCI 4K cinematic resolution (4096x2160) at 120Hz with HDMI 2.1 FRL and DP2.1, as well as some 4:3 aspect ratio screens such as QXGA (2048x1536) for gamers who create and creators who game?
