You can get a decent tone on any guitar, its all about the touch and how hard you push into the fretboard when tapping. Practice it over and over again to avoid getting any buzz.

Hey man, this tutorial was really helpful man, learnt loads. Just had a question, I was struggling loads on learning a piece which involved 2 hand tapping. I have to tap bass with right hand up on the neck, and play melody with fretting hand, with tapping only. Problem is, I cannot get volume out of hammering on and off and tapping with my fretting hand only, its much too quiet compared to my bass sound. Also, you got any tips on hand independence, for playing percussion with right hand and tapping melodies with fretting hand only?

Its a steel string but this can be done on a nylon string as well. You just won't get as loud of an attack but you gotta deal with what you've got, right?
