I've been daily driving my E30 M3 round trip 80 mi a day for 5 years. It's left me stranded once due to a mistake on my part. It's been the most reliable car Ive ever had besides my E46 M3 SMG, which had 180k mi when I sold it.

Wrong, e34 you still have to cut and weld coilovers. Good luck finding a manual e34 though. You can still find stock e46, plenty of old grandma willing to sell for under 3k.

I got my e38 for $1000 and my e82 for $2800. I'm just curious why he said to avoid the 750il v12. That's what my e38 is. Maybe he said to avoid it because the v12 are harder to find.

E46 is far easier to maintain than the e39 amd e38 which are a hodgepodge of first and second gen computerized tech.
Plug in a computer with DIS and ISTA and the e46 will tell you exactly what failed, where it is, and how to replace it.
The e34 is analog tech so they are also easier to fix.
