An open face onion sandwich is the traditional side dish for Navy bean soup in my family - homemade white bread, sweet butter and Vidalia onion cut thick. I served it for one of my professors back in my college days and the expression on his face after his first bite still puts a mischievous grin on my face.

Omg I use to love these with either a thin slice of cheese or a thin slice of tomato never the two together with the onion ...and rather than butter it was best foods mayo
