I work as an editor in documentaries. Hands down the voice-fixing tool they are talking about would save me hours and hours of time fixing dialogue. Editors have a lot power to alter what people say already—-and it’s quite clear where the ethical line is, preserving context, not putting words in mouths etc—but we become helpless in the face of these tiny problems with syllables and intonation that take literally days to solve sometimes. Of course, subjects in documentaries would need to sign off on these tiny manipulations going forward, but I look forward to using such tools and yes, they would speed up productivity considerably.

What I got out of this is writers used to have an incredible gig working half of the year and chilling for the rest, while making good money and living the LA lifestyle. They got disrupted and now instead of innovating they are striking?

GPT can do humor, but it was neutered in the early days. It did humor great with less guard rails. Playing around with it it looks like we disallowed certain creativity in the tech (for public consumption). It also tends to heavily towards feel good and positive themes.

Lon is right, AI hasn't gotten funnier. Everything other aspect of AI is progressing quickly, but it can't really do humor yet.
