Super Mario: Last Impact Review

Hello, and welcome to the Beardicus Show. In today's episode, Beardicus talks about a ROM hack for Super Mario 64.

Addendum: It has come to my attention that those switches I mention at 3:54 are not actually challenging--I'm just an idiot.

I stand by my opinion of those gears though.

2:11 actually the camera is better than sm64 because holding the Dpad up or down will adjust the camera. Even better, pressing r will center the camera behind mario

Its a pretty good understandable review I gotta say cause people like to call this a fantastic rom hack while ignoring many of its core flaws. You got my sub.

Just found out this review, I decided to do a blind Let's Play of this game on my channel since I love Mario 64 and it would be fun to experience a newly fresh Mario 64 ROM with extra features and brand new mechanics... Boy was I wrong.

To be fair, I told myself I would 100% the game to explore every bits this game has to offer, holy crap some missions are extremely frustrating. Right now, I managed to finish the second castle (the one with dark Mario) with all (I think) the stars I could get at this point (so in total I gathered 90 stars). 100% the game is probably my problem since the optional levels are the most irritating shit I've ever done. I will be honest tho, the first 5 courses we're overall amazing (maybe course 4 was a little disappointing), course 6 was good, course 7 was probably my favorite, but after that, course 8 to 10 was really bad. I don't even want to play the game anymore or continue the Let's Play I'm making right now if the later levels follow the same tediousness.

Also it seems there's no popular opinion about this hack, some people love it and some people hate it. Anyways great review my dude, was curious about what other people thought of this hack. Yes I can relate about the gears, I used save states on this part... not even ashamed. If the game's not fair, why should I?

I really agree with this review! Just beat this game yesterday and while I highly respect Kaze's work on this, he really needed help on the game/level design departement and I'm following you 100% on that regard.

I feel like Kaze's problem is originality over practicality. There's a lot of stars that are needlessly punishing and hard to get or execute constantly but they have unique ideas so it's approved even if it means sacrificing fun! It's totally not something I agree with and it can even been seen with some overworld layouts that prefer "looking good" than being simple to move around...
Still, I can't say I didn't liked this mod! But I'd probably not replay it and it make me enjoy simplier mods like "Another Super Mario 3D" even more.

The point of the first phase is to be not challenging. Rashay is not taking you seriously at all, he's just playing with you. It begins to be serious at phase 3.

Also am I the only one who doesn't have any difficulty with the gears ?

As for the puzzle, if you backtrack a bit, there is a bob omb that will give you the solution.

Hey, at 5:25 when you said it's bad game design -- with due respect, you've left out some critical info there, those goombas that can only be defeated by fire flower clearly differ in design, and that design is a nod in the direction of the fire flower (wooden heads). To say it gives mixed signals is misleading.

I also think saying the game giving no feedback to those 3 goombas is bad doesn't make a lot of sense as to why given how you said you don't want the game to hand-hold. There's interaction with those goombas beforehand, they (again) differ in design, and there's no tools hinted to that are necessary to beat them. Maybe it's easy to say given I've seen the solution, but given how you've always ground pounded on goombas to kill them, that's likely the first thing you will try, and given they have a reinforced structure, its not unreasonable to think that structure has to break.

All of this is just feedback & discussion of course. I didn't really like this game at all (only played up to the 2nd hub but still). You did a fine job with this review a and you will get better with trial and error. All the best.
