I love Steve Vai’s method, it’s very similar to this. Put the backing track on repeat and keep improvising over it for a long period of time (he does it for 1-2h, I usually do it for 10-20mins). Then listen to everything and select the cool parts, add them all together, then record the thing as a whole

Dude… I’d love for you to break down the art of tracking. You literally track everything yourself from drums, bass, keys, and guitar— it sounds killer! I’d love to see your process, especially as it pertains to overdubbing, recording to a click-track etc.

That's funny. Literally yesterday I saw a youtube comment saying the solo on comfortably numb was spliced together from multiple takes. I've done something similar before, but wasn't really sure if it was the "right" way of doing it, so it's nice to see that it's totally valid!

🤘🏻love this! That's a pretty neat way to make up solos, spliced like Frankenstein, awesome.

This is GENIUS!!! Why didn't I ever think about using this method when I was recording guitar solos? I improvise most of my solos, my solos would've sounded MUCH better had I known about this 10 years ago.

Cool solo for sure. I've done something sort of similar before when recording, where I like say the first half of one take and the second of another and I combine those together, but I've never bothered to actually learn them by heart... Solos have always been and will always be a one-time thing for me, I have zero interest in playing the same thing more than once.

Wow! This kicks ass Mike! Great idea. Your solo sounded really good, especially with the harmony. Thanks, my dude! ❤🤘😝🤘

Couldn't agree more with this method. I ended up spending the dough on the not-as-popular (but I still love it) Mixcraft 8 Pro DAW so that I could record, rearrange, splice, etc. Not as robust as Abelton or FL, but still amazing and cost friendly, and you do get stuff like Melodyne included.

This is an excellent method but what I've noticed when I do it is that that when you learn it afterwards, it never sounds quite as cool. It will still sound good and no-one will call you on it, but there is something about the attack and performance when your improvising it that makes it stronger the first time because I think your brain is focused more on it at that moment where as when you play it again after that you are just playing what you learned and that element of the brainwaves connected directly to it in its creative mode is missing. Or something like that. Which is unfortunate, but what are you gonna do. Maybe it's just me. It's probably the best method though.

Because I come from classical music I have a weird way to write solos: I compose them first in a notation-software and afterwards I see how I can transfer the composed lines to the fretboard.

What scale was used for this? Killer solo man

Interesting method. I'm so used to just looping the section, and just play until it comes out right. Or just tab it before hand. But this looks more seamless

Hey mike, great vid!
I just wanted to say that a video clearly explaining how to write different types of guitar harmony lines is pretty much non existent on youtube, i think you could do a great job of it... perhaps showing examples from the eagles, boston and metallica etc?

I do same recording method for solos and riffs I started using the splice because time reasons and before started splice it would take me an hour or to get the solo right
