Another tip for killer riff writing: time signature changes. Pick an existent riff (for example, a classical 4/4 riff) and try to modify it to fit into a 3/4, 6/4 or 7/4 signature. You will get some interesting shit from those rhythm changes.

Thanks for reminding me of how I did it! I used to beat around the bush for years, then suddenly I understood how inspiration worked and started creating endless riffs I never thought I could have came up with.

I knew a band once that used to write riffs by opening a phone directory (for anyone not old enough to know what this was, a big book full of phone numbers) and randomly pointing at the page. The sequence of numbers they landed on would be their new riff. Boom. 😂

I would just make up random sick melodies on my mind, try to play them, add some notes to make it more full, and do a Soundgarden and change between odd time signatures.

This is a really good tip. I play bass, and I took a really easy bass line, (My Sharona) and gave it a 7/8 time signature and added a couple notes. It sounded like a really sick djent riff that I plan on using later on in my “career”
