What is ANZAC Day?

We commemorate ANZAC Day every April 25th, but why is it considered our most important national occasion?

The ANZACS or the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were the brave soldiers who stood, fought, and died during the First World War.

The First World War started in 1914. At that time, Australia had been under the control of the British Empire for 13 years and New Zealand for 7 years.

In 1915, Australia and New Zealand became witnesses to the new army of volunteer soldiers. The brave forces went out to the Gallipoli Peninsula to claim Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire and one of Germany’s allies.

The Anzacs landed on April 25th.

But the Ottoman Turkish defenders were ready for the attack…

The soldiers knew that winning was impossible. Nevertheless, they continued to fight for 8 MONTHS…

Notwithstanding the hardships, bloodshed and the loss of over 8,000 lives, the end of 1915 marked the end of the battle for the ANZACS. They were successfully evacuated by the British.

The story of the soldiers, the ANZAC legends who gave their lives in Gallipoli, hit the hearts of the citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

In 1916, they made April 25th the day these heroes are to be remembered for their sacrifices and their commitment to uphold liberty at all costs.

Today, Australia and New Zealand hold special events each year to remember and express their gratitude to the Knights of Gallipoli who selflessly risked their lives for the common good and for believing that their respective countries are worth fighting and dying for.

There is no enemy
There is no victory
Only boys who lost their lives in the sand
Young men were sacrificed
Their names are carved in stone and kept alive
and forever we will honour the memory of them
And they knew they would die

Ataturk said:
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."

Literally so proud to hear those amazing drums and bagpipes that honour family, friends and foes. Turks, Kiwis and Aussies, stand proud today together. We will always remember them.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them." The Ode

ANZAC Day was commemorated with respect and dignity in London yesterday. The bells of Westminster Cathedral rang fast and loud for a long time after the church service, in the spring sunshine, many other events took place, many uniformed personnel. The Cenotaph war memorial in Whitehall was busy, I paid my own respects there too to our Commonwealth brothers and sisters, to all. Lest we forget. From a Pom.

Everybody who had fought in the war, wether it being WW1 or 2, they are fighters, they are strong. They, whom who fought for us, will remain, in memory, of every child, man, woman, they died for us, please, after reading this. Give the strong men and women a moment of silence, to thank them, let them Rest In Peace and of course, Lest We Forget.

A century ago, the Ottomans were our enemy. Today, we stand side by side with the Turks as friends and allies. Time brings healing and forgiveness.

Greetings to our Australian brothers and sisters. As Americans we want you to know we are thinking of you this Anzac day. We know your ancestors great sacrifices and appreciate what you have accomplished and fought for. We too pray that your military men and women overseas are safe and in good health and spirit. You truly are Americas best allies and we appreciate you. I was in the American special forces and served with Aussies, I couldn't think of any other countryman I would want by my side. I salute you Australia, god bless and don't forget your fallen, we won't.

I love the ANZAC's, they were very loyal and compassionate to all of us. If they didn't, we wouldn't "remember".
