Can PRP Injections ACTUALLY Delay Knee Replacement Surgery?

PRP injections prevent knee arthritis from getting worse. This randomized controlled trial found that a series of three platelet rich plasma injections reduced pain by up to 90% and improved function by almost 50% when used to treat symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Furthermore they found that one series of PRP injections were able to slow down the progression of knee arthritis when compared to placebo injections.

► Things my patients have found helpful:
Please note that I get a lot of requests and questions about what equipment is ‘best’ for treating a variety of conditions. The following is not meant to be an exhaustive or definitive list. Please use it as a starting point. If you have questions, please discuss with your healthcare provider. With that said, I have tried a number of the products below, but not all. I have included some based on positive feedback from many of my patients. As an Amazon Associate, Dr Peng earns from qualifying purchases. Dr Peng, you are a tremendous communicator. Your videos are concise and very easy to understand. My wife has severe osteoarthritis on one knee. Would PRP injections be a waste of money for stage 4 bone on bone?

Dr. Ping, I've watched all your videos. Thanks for the good information.I got three PRP injections from my orthopedic surgeon for my torn meniscus about 9 months ago and it really helped.Don't know if it would of gotten better on it's own but if you have the money ( I paid $600 per injection ) I would recommend it to someone as long as they know if not a magic bullet and it will not grow back new cartilage. I think the most important information you could give to someone after PRP injections with knee issues, is to change your diet, get away from processed foods and loose weight.

I am a male, 72 year old with advanced arthritis in my right knee as the cartilage was remove on one side, HS football (ACL broken). I am looking to use PRP to delay a knee replacement. After reviewing your and other presentations on PRP, I would like to try this. I am, however, concerned about the volume of PRP fluid proposed by a physician. The proposal was for a 15cc draw with an injection of about 5cc. My blood analysis showed a PLT count of 188 (range 130—400 K/ul). It was said that that would be all the space could take. I am not a little guy, 5'10, 250lb and active (gym 3 days/week with trainer, sauna, and outside yard work.

Should I seek a second opinion?

Dr.Peng. I have successfully used PRP 10 years ago as an alternative to rotator cuff surgery. Dr. Mark Berman in Beverly Hills was a pioneer in this treatment and passed away from COVID last year. I live on San Juan Island in Washington State now. Near Seattle. Can you suggest a physician near me? Thanks for your work on YouTube. Wish I lived in Camble CA.

Hello Dr. Peng. I am a 28 years old dancer and I have a cartilage defect in the patellofemoral compartment due to an accident. I have tried PT for over a year but I still feel a pinching pain where the damage is. I have decided to get PRP shots after watching your videos, but here you say that the symptoms return to baseline after 24 months. I don't understand, isn't the PRP supposed to regenerate the lost cartilage? If yes, then why would the symptoms return? I do not have any degenerative disorder.
