What Happened To The 7 Wonders of The Ancient World?

The Lighthouse of Alexandria suffered damage from several earthquakes between 956 and 1323 CE, eventually leading to its final collapse. The ruins were then used in other constructions. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was destroyed by fire after being relocated to Constantinople. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, if it ever really existed, were likely destroyed natural disasters or warfare might have caused their destruction. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was destroyed by arson and rebuilt a couple of times before being razed for a final time by the early Chritians. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was damaged by earthquakes and completely destroyed by the 15th century. The Colossus of Rhodes was a large bronze statue that toppled in an earthquake in 226 BCE. Its remnants were later sold off by invaders. And finally we have the Great Pyramid of Giza, which although still intact is missing its polished limestone cover and gold capstone.

CORRECTION: Whilst it is widely theorised that the capstone was made of gold/was coated in a layer of golf leaf, this is not known for sure. It could have been made of something different entirely, or it may not have had a capstone at all (although other pyramids did have gold capstones so the Great Pyramid probably did too)

Ironic that the Great Pyramids were the oldest of the Seven Wonders and outlasted the other 6 wonders!

Moral of the story, make structurally sound, quake-proof monuments

I find it funny that the reason the piramids survived all that nature and man could throw at it while the rest collapsed is because a piramid is simply the best shape

While the pyramids are of course strong, Egypt in general is much less vulnerable to earthquakes compared to Greece and Anatolia, which caused the destruction of most of these wonders

The fact that the Hanging Gardens were in Babylon when it was destroyed is written in history books and recorded in many places including the archaeological digs of the past century. The point is that yes, they existed along with ancient Babylon but were destroyed by the Medes and the Persians when they invaded and killed king Belshazzar in 607 BCE by Persian king Cyrus and his men. King Darius the Mede complimented Cyrus's army by sending in the larger Median army to run things shortly afterwards. It's all recorded and written down. So yes, they existed at one time but the Bible's prophesy that Babylon would never be rebuilt still holds true to this day. The more you dig into it and research it the more fascinating this archaeology becomes!

Hey, just basically just learned about these in 10th grade history. You got it all correct about how they were destroyed and all. Good job and keep this. Your content is good

I can't believe there are people in the comments suggesting that ancient monuments/ building were poorly made when they literally stood intact for 1500-2000 years or more! How old is the oldest building in your cities now?
