Is the drive to create a legacy worth the pressure on ourselves and others?

How will others remember you after you’re gone? What will you leave behind, and do you even care? On this episode of Insight, guests discuss what drives them to build a legacy, and the pressures of inheriting a legacy they may not want.

Insight, hosted by Kumi Taguchi, is Australia's leading forum for powerful first-person stories offering a unique perspective on the way we live.

Insight first went to air in 1995 and has since been a mainstay of SBS current affairs programming. The team doesn't shy away from taboo topics: from polygamy, to brain implants, to the secrets revealed on the deathbed.

As a parent who adopted wonderful children who I love deeply, I always find it curious when I hear people say they desperately wanted a child and are in pain they couldn't be a parent. They should preface their comment with the adjective "biological".

I just could never imagine a life where am fully responsible for another life, when my mood changes so much, I change my mind so much. I am a creature of habit and like what I like. I like the option of leaving any situation. The responsibility for a child was just so serious to me...that I felt unless I could give them a life better than my own...it seemed ridiculous to want something I cant/ dont want to handle. I live in a country where it is really a choice to become a parent...for which am grateful

As a 46 year old with no children. I can relate to the grief of not being a mother. I tried to conceive for 13 years, spent $50k on fertility treatment

I feel a lot of pity for the woman who has sacrificed her own life and freedom to be the carer for her sibling.

It is great not to be a mother and grandkids. Lots of cognitive dissidence that parenting and being a grandmother is a joy. It is not for all

5:45 I can kind of relate to that woman. I’m an older guy without children. Whenever I say something people tell me to shut up 😂 I don’t even bring it up anymore.

Excellent episode and so very interesting. I appreciated everything your guests shared.

I am an authentic, vulnerable, down to earth person. I love people and look at each person as my long lost brother or sister. After all, down the line, we all come from the same place.

I love animals of all species and I eat a plant based diet.

I hope the legacy I leave is being remembered as a person who was kind, caring, loving, authentic, empathetic and a profound and avid animal lover. ❤️🙏
