Something I like with this antagonist is instead of acting outwardly mean, rude or disrespectful, Hugo's dad acts seemingly kind, tragic and sympathetic only to turn out to be a disloyal psychopath. Another thing they did with this story unlike the rest his comeuppance is really satisfying with the others they usually get exposed or humiliated but he got dragged and I like that.

The fact that he lied about being sick is bad enough. But to sell the house and leave them homeless... how dare he show his face? He abandoned his family to run off with a scammer. Now that his family is doing better, he wanted them to take him back? Is he crazy? Is he stupid? After what he did, he's lucky they just slammed the door in his face.
