I am so grateful about the community on my channel that is so encouraging and supporting! It's a very interactive community, I see them sharing, liking and commenting on everything so much more than on much bigger channels. So my advice: I've never paid for any advertising on my socials and I think it was a good call: the community is growing slowly, but it's made of people who really care!! I think that avoiding advertising on your small channel is one key factor to build a strong community. If youe channel is small and you pay for an ad, you might see the subs count going up but... How many of them really care? It's definitely something to think about.

A lot of great infromation once again. The difference between an audience and a community is huge. Getting people to feel emotionally safe in the community is so hard to do but so worth it when it happens.

I've noticed that my channel has attracted a interesting cross section of different communities. I've been struggling with keeping up with all of them. I'd really like to move towards my own community instead of just being a small part of several. Thanks for giving me this to ponder.

Thank you! I'll be incorporating this into future videos! I think your advice about creating more of an emotional connection is spot on! (even for a horror channel lol)

I was thinking about Primal Branding through this video and you just happen to mention it at the end.
I got it when you recommended it a year or so ago and it's great.
Things like the creation story to show the audience/community where you started from, how you got where you are now (with their help).
Icons, rituals, sacred words to make people feel like they're part of something bigger than themselves and that they've came together to share a common goal/belief.

Great video Tim :).

my community is slow to transfer from Facebook where i have over 3, 000 followers. Lots watch but don't subscribe. new watchers in USA are of a younger demographic that UK which is interesting but don't seem to comment. I am amazed how well the wee channel has done in under a year though. never thought it would do well. it may be small in comparison but over 11, 000 views seems immense to me. I have run giveaways etc to encourage folk to subscribe but it doesn't work amazingly. xx thanks for great videos. they have helped me immensely.Best wishes from Scotland

It may cut both way but *asking a controversial question* can help to start a discussion and thus increase community engagement.

I discovered last weekend that hangouts on air are great for community building, and loved it so much to see the community chatting with each other in the chat. Then, that carried on into the comments on my next video. Great video Tim.

I feel it is important to engage with your subscribers as much as possible, too, and not just be the face of the videos, but to show you are a real person. :)

These are all very important. I let my community know that I care about each and every one of them. When I suggest for someone to subscribe I tell them that I would like them to be a part of the growing family in this community because I don't see my subscribers as a statistic, stat, number, etc. I see it as a growing community, family, long distance friends. They know that I will back them up and I even had a community member give a death threat to one of my other members, I had the victims back and so did the other community members. We work together and it feels great. I give them updates on ideas for the channel and allow them to give feedback on what they would like to see come to the channel, I let them play games with me during live streams, talk to the via email, twitter, comments or even party chat. I try to be as engaging as possible, but I am also myself. I love the community I have created, but maybe its more of a dedicated audience. The channel is growing slowly, but that is because of the changes I made, but I am confident it will go much fast in the future.
