The Scary Power of Facial Recognition in Lightroom CC

LIGHTROOM FACE MODE: AUTOMATIC FACE DETECTION, FINDING FACES, ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS! | Learn to use the “Face” Mode in Lightroom | We will cover quickly breaking down folders and batches of photos and assigning all the faces to Lightroom for fast sorting and automatic face detection for future imports and other untagged images.

In this Lightroom tutorial, we’ll talk about setting up the Face Mode in Lightroom to scan photos in your library and start assigning names to the faces which Lightroom will then automatically detect. You can use this feature with keywords, build a custom filter to find only certain people, add additional photos of people to the face library that you’ve already built in Lightroom. We’ll cover so much of the coolness of this feature and we’ll see the borderline scary power of this feature as we watch Lightroom automatically “recognize” people in other photos once we’ve tagged that person in one photo. You’re going to love it!

Big question! I have aprox 120, 000 photos in an external hard drive. I learned a lot with this video and that's exactly what I want to do. BUT, where does all the tag information (names, places, personal comments, etc) get stored? Do they get stored in each file in the metadata, or does it get stored in a library?? I ask this question because lets say in 15 years from now, maybe Lightroom will not be available, so I would like each photo to have its own information and be able to open it with another software.
Thanks a lot for the answers!!!

Are these tags searchable outside of Lightroom or are they only usable in Lightroom?

Wow, I need to learn more about Lightroom! Ps- that bell sound in your intro has always seemed a few decibels too loud. Can I officially request it dropped a few clicks? Haha

Thanks for this, I did not know about the Drag 'n Drop feature; I laboriously typed in each and every name. But you can select multiple images, then type in one name and they will all appear on each image - if that made any sense... :-) I also like the way it will ask is this "Mary" as a suggestion, then you can select multiple images and just click <yes> and off it goes.
When they first introduced this feature I let it do my entire family collection of over 9, 000 images from portraits, to class pictures. I was amazed to see it recognize my cousin when she was 11 years old and then associate that shot to one when she was 30. But it's not perfect, it can mistake the weirdest combinations at times. While this is amazing and fun, I've found I never really use it that much, now that it's finished. Rarely do I need to see all images of one person at a time, but who knows it's nice to have that high degree of organization anyway.
It would be interesting if others would write in and let us know how they use this.

is it possible to use facial recognition to put sunglasses on a face?

Google Picasa did the same job. Much faster and much less processor intensive too. Pity the data isn't exportable and the program is unsupported now

Great video. :)

You only touched on it for a few seconds, but I think the Library filtering feature is one of the most powerful features (if not that, then certainly one of the most useful) in Lightroom.

Something very disturbing happened to me today. I recieved an email from a major corp. with a picture of me crossing the street. I was offered the job of " research". I saw no one take my pic and had not been in their store. Somehow from this small pic they tracked me down; name, email, etc. How would you feel?

Unfortunately, on the big scale Lightroom's facial recognitions suck big time. Out of curiosity I run it through my family album. It's only like better than nothing.
