Great review of one of our best sports cars. I do more miles in mine still than any other classic. They are tough and you can get everything you need to keep them on the road. Great fun.

Before I bought my '72 TR6, I thought I might want an Austin Healey 3000, but so glad I didn't get one. My TR6 has a hot custom cam, triple Webers, competition shocks and springs, bigger rear sway bar, lightened flywheel, electronic ignition, quad exhaust tips and much more. In overdrive it'll pull beyond 120 mph easily! It is a great car! Super reliable and fun to drive. If you are looking for a classic British roadster, look no further, buy one!

Had a 1971 TR6 PI and an Audi urQuattro about 40 years ago. When I moved to the UK, it was the TR that I missed most so I had it shipped. I still have it and agree with this excellent explanation. Some of the quirks are quite endearing, e.g. the need listen to the tone drop to tell you the fuel lines are pressurised and you can start turning the engine over to start. About once a year, I get a dry injector, but there is a knack for correcting that without leaving the driver''s seat. And that crazily heavy clutch...
They aren't a car for nervous passengers: the power means that can lurch a bit, which, combined with the relatively low seating and that amazing exhaust note... it does sound a bit scary.
They're made for winding country roads with a few hills to climb.

Back in the late 70's my dad's boss had a TR6 in that colour. As a young kid I thought it was awesome. Still do!

We timed my standard 1969 Pi car at 7.6 secs 0-60mph, and got a timing ticket of 15.87 secs for the Standing Start 1/4 mile at 84 mph at Blackbushe in 1976.Very under rated cars back in the day, and are amazing value today.

Well the 6 was a nice ride but my favourite TR was my '62 TR3A which I bought in Calgary back in 1975. It was a wonderful car and I drove it all around western Canada and the Rockies. That winter I decided to return home to Nova Scotia. Starting in British Columbia I headed east on my 6, 000 km plus journey through the snow. I didn't get much warmth from the heater (and those side curtains could always be a little drafty) yet my TR cruised along with great traction and determination. Some of the temperatures faced were below -40C but that car never had any problem starting. Of course a few "fun" 😊 stops were made along the way and after three weeks on Christmas Eve that sweet British Racing Green pal of mine got me home safe and sound to Halifax. It's a memory I'll always treasure.

I have one. She (Tia(TR) Maria) is 52 years of age. I will never sell her. She spends the winter sleeping and then pops to the shops and afar in spring. I am a lucky man. Please note that car you are driving is played with. The seats look awful and the steering wheel too. Also that is NOT a walnut dash! The driving does need concentration and you rarely hear the sound unless you go in a tunnel (a must!). I really enjoy the car and one should get one. It is an amazing fun car. No MOT (BUT I insist on having one) NO tax (declared "Historic") and insured at £30 k at £140 pounds a year! Marvellous.

The throttle linkage on the CR cars was 'softened' to make throttle response les snappy. This worked fine when new, however once worn can result in throttle bodies opening less than half of maximum. Change this to a CP - type system and the performance is transformed. Add an electric fan, polly bushed suspension with adjustable telescopic shocks and you have a very nice driver's car on A and B roads.

Still looking for my father's TR6 - PPX611K which he sold to a man on the North Circular in a traffic jam in the '80s.

Awesome video! Very detailed. I just couldn't get when the euro cars started using the US camshafts, new fuel pump, etc.

My first TR was a 1975 Magenta TR6, then I bought a 1963 TR4 which I still have 38 years later along with a 1958 TR3 which I imported from the US and did a nut & bolt restoration on - my favourite, the TR4, followed by the TR6.

When people ask me which British sports car would I ideally love to own - always the TR 6. Still a great looking car - however not too long ago there was a cottage industry that flourished around these cars. Rot, build quality, mechanical problems, and reliability. Any body back in the day would have been well glad to off load one within avery short period of ownership Those that have survived will have been extensively rebuilt, and needed to be rebuilt by experts - those rebuilt by amateurs perhaps not so good. I came across a real beauty in Manchester very recently stunning car. His son was guarding it, in the Supermarket car park.Hard car to beat visually.

Owned a yellow one in the 70s fantastic to drive, quick in it's day, total rot boxes, mine seemed to get new rust blisters by the day.

Thank you for a very interesting video. I have got an MGC Roadster that has got all the uprated suspension and engine modifications developed by Doug Smith at MG Motorsport which overcome the relative shortcomings of the C in standard spec. Looks like driving a TR6 is as thrilling as an uprated C!

I think that the engine detune was just to save costs, because the engine camshaft, pistons, valves etc were brought in line with the Triumph 2.5 PI saloon car, which saved construction time as only one engine came down the production line.

The TR6 was the first car that caught my attention as a child when my neighbor came home with a brand new BRG TR6 in 1976. Strangely, I never drove one until very recently despite owning two MGBs and a Spitfire. I had a chance to drive an original 12k mile 1976 with Overdrive. I loved it. The sound of the six is intoxicating. Prices seem flat to down on these in the US and I dare say a nice TR6 is worth less than an early Mazda MX5. Reliability vs character… tough choice.

I had a white N reg back in the day. Loved it. You didn’t mention the overdrive which I found very useful. Clutch was heavy in town but get out on to a decent road and it was easy to drive.
