Donald Trump accepted the invitation to be interviewed at the gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists but opted to treat it with combative regard and told a lot of lies. Yamiche Alcindor, NBC news correspondent, Jelani Cobb, dean of the Columbia Journalism School, and Rashad Robinson, spokesperson for the Color of Change PAC, talk with Alex Wagner about Trump's play to take the spotlight back from Kamala Harris' energized campaign.

I actually commented yesterday that I was surprised that we thought there might be a different outcome to this joint interview. I thought we're all wasting our time and energy when we know who he is. After a long night of sleeplessness, I agree with everyone on your panel: these ladies pressed for answers, didn't give up, stood their ground and, in the end, did the best job I've witnessed in showing the real trump. Refusing to let him slide and holding their ground was impressive and smart. Thank you, NABJ, for being on your/our game.

Since 2015 we have witnessed what the lack of a legal vetting system has wrought for the American people. Every candidate should be required, at a minimum, to pass a governmental security clearance, release 10 years of taxes and pass a civics test PRIOR to declaring their candidacy. That a lone would have prevented the current vile crop of Republicans such as Trump, Boebert, Santos, Gaetz, Greene, et al. This should be made mandatory.

It was a great use of the NABJ convention to have Trump visit. He was horrible while the journalists on the stage with him were professional and just really good at their job. They continued to ask him questions, not letting him off the hook, while maintaining their composure. The journalists were very impressive.
