Low Protein & Longevity

In this QUAH Sal, Adam, & Justin answer the question “You guys frequently mention consuming 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight and mostly from meat for its muscle-building effects and satiating factors. However, we know from data from the blue zones, longevity comes from lower protein intake and many of these people don’t resistance train.

What about higher based meat protein diets for longevity in individuals who don’t train?”

If you would like to get your own question answered, follow us on Instagram where we post QUAH requests weekly.

muscle can be protective later in life. it can encourage the body to retain tissue. not just muscle tissue, essentially, the tissue in our brain and heart. the heart is an involuntary muscle.

You’re also contradicting yourselves with your own ‘hacks’. Caloric fasting, protein fasting, and ‘vegan’ fasting are all examples of lower protein consumption, which is why they’re beneficial. You want to activate AMPK through exercise, but lower mTOR and IGF-1 by avoiding high-protein diets.

Come on guys, take a trip to any of these blue zones and tell these active, healthy seniors they've been eating too little protein for centuries. BTW, we have one right here in the US. They can't all be genetic outliers. Most middle income or better citizens in first world countries are NOT deficient in protein. Fact is they're deficient in *FIBER*

You’re out of your depth on this one, guys. All the leading experts in epigenetics research agree that diets high in protein, and specifically the sulphur-containing amino acids (like methionine) found primarily in animal-based foods, decrease longevity, even if you resistance train. Yes, you need a little extra protein to build significant amounts of muscle, but there’s a price associated with that lifestyle.

How does one's life become better if you have more muscle?? That strikes me as b.s.

What these guys aren't getting is that people on plant based diets simply need way less calories. I was a college athlete, I'm still the same basic weight and build I was in college but I've been on a plant based diet for 30 years. I eat around 1500 calories or less most days (one large meal 700ish calories, one medium meal 500ish calories and some fruit or fruit smoothie 300ish calories). Yes occasionally (2-3 times a month) I'll have a bigger eating day (which usually means I ate some crappy food) and I'll get my calories up around 2000, but you simply don't need anywhere near as much food on a whole food plant based diet.

bodybuilder and love gains and protein but cant ignore the data that shows higher protein decreases you cant make claims like eat high protein most days then have a low/no portein day once a week and you will get the same benefits.... your stimulating mtor most days still. also the data clearly shows that chaloric restriction but a high protein macro ratio did not have the longetivity benefits, they were all wiped out by the protein, furthermore no caloric restriction but jus tlow protein still had lots of longetivity benefits so its clearly limiting mtor acitvation that creates a lot of the longetivity benefitss nothing wrong with eating high protein if you choose to but dont lie to yourself and others that it doesnt effect longetivity
