Will we be able to make perfect and smooth gradients in Adobe Illustrator? The vector based program that is notoriously difficult for making gradients in? Today we will look at some tips and techniques when making gradients in Adobe Illustrator, that will really take things to new levels.

It can be annoying when we print out a design that uses a gradient, and it has banding all over the place. Or maybe when we generate a gradient for a RGB design, and it looks horrible. There are some tips and techniques that can help with these issues, such as adding a grain noise, using more colours, and other neat little hacks that can really help when using gradients.

The grain thing is awesome! Worked with Illustrator for 5 years and always struggled with 10+ nuances to get less banding! Thx mate for this one!

If you're using CMYK or spot colours (or a mix of both), gradients can look noticeably worse as it's much harder to blend inks smoothly. They can look grey in the middle because of the inks ramping down from one side to the other. Use RGB swatches for better gradients, but if you have to use CMYK adding extra steps and noise as shown in this video helps. If you're using spots you may want to look into mixed ink swatches for the inside steps.

Working in 16-bit in Photoshop does wonders for gradients as well.

a great tool is Appearance were you can apply multiple effects to text and still can be edited such as gradient too
