Why all phones feel the same (and what comes next).

It's not just you. All smartphones feel the same and I have a hunch that one thing is going to change our smartphones in more ways than one. This is what I believe to be the catalyst for how our smartphones could evolve forever.

at this point most phones specially flagships are almost the same so i just say buy the one you just like the most. like if you like the brand of it or the shape of it or maybe the UI of it. just buy what you like the most and you think is cooler. cause all of them will perform more than you ever need

For the VAST majority of casual users, smartphones in the last 5 years have been more than good enough for just about everything they do. Even camera quality 5 years ago was pretty impressive.

They typically don't play demanding video games, so processor speed is a non-issue.

Battery life might be an issue but charging is usually not an ordeal.

That's why in my social circle (friends, family, colleagues), people keep their phones for at least 5 years. In fact, some of them replace the battery and squeeze another 5 years of life out of their phone. I almost did that until my phone literally died and I bought an iPhone 15. I hope to get 10 years out of this iPhone.

AI? I really don't give a shit.

My new favorite thing to do with friends, is when they're not looking and their phone is out, I switch our cell phones and wait to see how long it takes them to realize it's no longer their phone below them.

I have been using Samsung Note 9 since 6 years. Only last week I changed its battery. I'm not a gamer. This phone is a work horse. Not many complaints regarding Camera performance too except at low light. Display is solid even after many falls. Flagships are keepers. They serve you well if you give them a little care ❤

6.6 to 6.9 is HUGE, please stop encouraging manufacturers to enlarge their phones

We haven't reached smartphone peak though. It will be a peak when phones have IR blasters, headphone jacks and SD card slots. As long as these basic features are missing, no phone deserves to be called peak.

But also this year we're finally getting the (Lithium-Silicon) next gen battery tech on phones like OnePlus 13, 6000 mAh is going to be the standard for phone batteries going forward
we've finally broken past 5000mAh

Definitely a HUGE no to a single ultrawide with 200MP. You cannot, I repeat, CANNOT, fake optics with post processing. It's not just about quality, but also about a different perspective. Different magnification between the foreground and the background. Different resolution of the subject characteristics (try taking a portrait with an ultrawide and then with a telephoto lens while keeping similar framing).

If you only said that to have more comment interaction under the video: well done, I guess 😅

I guarantee that if you upgrade from a note 9 or s10, the s24 ultra will feel like alien tech, yes we reached a plateau, but that's precisely why you don't need to upgrade every year, not even every 2 years, use your phone 3 to 4 years and then once you upgrade the change will feel substantial

Sony was the only company doing things differently but they gave in to peer pressure with the Xperia 1 Mark 6. Shame they threw away their unique aspect ratio, camera software and 4k display just to become another brick in the wall.

The form factor look almost identical but the experience are different

6:10 YES YES YES YES YES, I have been wanting this since the time computational photography has boomed into our lives. I don't understand why an ultrawide lens cannot zoom into a photo, and the software remove all the aberrations? I understand that implementing a telephoto setup can be difficult because of the lenses, but still. Glad that I'm not the only person on this boat.

Other than S pen, I don't see any distinctive feature in the entire smartphone industry.

Nowadays it's all about that POWER, higher antutu scores, nothing new or revolutionary. It's all about the NUMBERS game. Feeding on the FOMO part of having the latest and greatest phone is what makes others buy phones, not about something new

Because when Huawei were kicked out everyone else realised they didn't need to actually try with their phones. Apple know they can put out the exact same phone every year and ppl will buy it. Samsung and Google know they can have smaller batteries and slower charging than the competition for as long as they want, they'll still sell phones

2:48 a moment of silence for our fallen Nexus 6Ps 😣 it was such a good phone back then
And I have similar thoughts Ryan, though i would think that we'd only need 2 cameras in the future, the ultrawide you mentioned as well a periscope telephoto lens w/a base 10x OPTICAL zoom.

5:02 Really good point. We might not need computers anymore your phone is literally a hand-held computer

Glad you're mentioned Dex. OnePlus has their version of a desktop too. A lot of people could save money buying just a laptop shell, screen, keyboard, battery, & have their phone as the processor & they brains. There's not many manufacturers that sell those type of laptops & not all phone OEMs support video out. No it's not going to suit everyone. There's video rendering & heavy tasks that need a Windows laptop or apple laptop. We should be voting with our wallets, not following everyone else.
