I compare my Esker Japhy to the Canyon Grand Canyon 5 and explain why one bike cost $4000 and the other only cost $700.

Good comparison. You did an excellent job showing why there is a difference in price. Thanks for sharing.

An Industry Nine wheel and hub costs around $1000. That's just one rear wheel. Once you wrap your head around the differences in components and their cost, it becomes easier to see why the better bikes cost so much. I chose a Pivot Switchblade which is rather expensive. But, I'm retired and ride a lot. I'm more concerned with being able to ride rough trails and not beat my body up. Bike fit and ride compliance was high on the list. I have those same XT brake levers and I really enjoy them. The difference is quite noticeable. Thanks for another great video!

Very clear comparison. I would be curious to see a similar comparison between a more midrange bike (around 1.5K) and a higher end bike.

Hey brother, just wanted to fill in some info gaps for your Canyon. The bars are the iridium aluminum flat bars, 5mm rise and weight approx 260g depending on width. The brakes are shimano mt200's with shimano RT10 160/180 discs. Your cassette should be a deore m6100 12s micro spline 10-51. The crank is a shimano mt510, which is aluminum along with a 30t aluminum chain ring sitting inside of a shimano bsa bb52 bottom bracket. Stem is also aluminum and 117g. The bars and stem also come on some of their $2000+ bikes. Throw an air fork, dropper post, and a tubeless rim/tire combo, and you have a serious hardtail with some huge cost savings. Some guys remove all of the deore components/brakes/crank and replace with XT equip right out the gate too for a killer shifting/stopping groupset. Cheers, happy trails!

How come your XT build didn't come with Wolf Tooth Resolve & Remote dropper and Industry Nine Stem and looks like the handlebars are not RF Next R 35 x 800mm? Did the spec change since your order?

On the topic of budget mtbs, maybe you could put a suspension fork on your Fargo and see how it does on the trails, and some 700c road wheels on the road giving someone one bike for all conditions

I can see that qualify cost money but I also think the bike companies are charging too much . Now that the economy is back to a downturn I think they will need to adjust their prices accordingly or some may go out of business . $4000 for a bicycle is not realistic in my opinion

I dream of someday owning an Esker. But I also dream of living someplace with actual topography to make a mtb worthwhile. Honestly the price of that GC5 is pretty impressive. Its basically a near head-to-head with the Poseidon's blowing up facebook advertising but at a fraction of the price. Canyon Stoic 2 is another bike that, imo, has a pretty amazing price and might be the best value proposition for a lower cost build
