Can you do this technique but just with bare wood (has been sanded down) underneath? I don’t want another color showing thru the distress, but just the wood coloring. Would I need to stain wood beforehand or just leave it bare?

I purchased a used pedestal stand l'm trying to distress. It started in some dark finish. Someone painted over it in a green. I wanted white with the dark coming through where l rub. Problem is every where rub the white comes off showing the green. If l try to rub more to reveal the dark the sanding rubs off beyond my area l'm trying to distress and shows the green there. Any ideas on how l can sand to the dark finish without sanding further and revealing the green ?
