For thousands of years, agarwood has been known as "The Wood of the Gods." First-grade agarwood can cost as much as $100,000 per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive raw materials in the world. Aquilaria malaccensis is a tree native to the rainforests of southeast Asia. The healthy heartwood inside Aquilaria trees is pale, odorless, and worthless. In order for this tree to produce any agarwood, it must first become infected with mold. So how does this infection process work? What is agarwood used for? And what makes it so valuable?

In India, sandalwood is similiar, but unlike agarwood, the wood inherently has a fragrance. It's wood is used as incense and soap fragrance. I had a sandalwood tree in my garden. The fragrance of the wood can be smelled even metres away from the tree! One night, when we were out, somebody chopped it and stole it. That's how prized they are. I miss that tree it smelled so nice :(

Only humans would make a tree filled with mold that expensive.

A lot of foreigners came to the Philippines to buy agarwood. They bought it for $6, 000/kg at the highest. People in the mountain side went crazy and chopped these woods. We have no idea it was that expensive. We didn't even know that tree exists. People thought they're lucky not knowing it was actually around $100, 000/kg. And those were really high quality agarwood, not like the wood in this video. The trees were huge and completely blackened. Really old trees found in the deep forest. Now the government banned people from cutting them.

Vietnamese here, agarwood incense is mostly used in Buhhidst pagodas and family shrines, so I formally call them "the religious weed to communicate with your ancestor".

One of the main reasons Agarwood has become so expensive is it's recent "discovery" by the Western perfume companies, and the hipster douchebag crowd with more money than they know what to do with.

There's a certain poetry to wood made from infected injuries being called heavenly, especially when it's exploited this hard.

I hope they're planting those trees they're harvesting and are not just destroying the wild trees.

My father works for Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, he once said that a log of Agarwood often require Army supervision to transport..

Edit: Today I had a bit chat with my dad about Agarwood. He said many Indonesian still consider the smell of burning Agarwood as a sign of demonic presence.

I want to see someone develop bacteria that produce the resin and flood the market so it's impossible for them to make it extinct.
