What are the pros and cons of living in Edinburgh? The city of Edinburgh is well-known for its medieval castles, the meandering lanes of Old Town, and the Georgian splendor of New Town. Edinburgh is a city that is nestled amid the hills. Despite its scenic appearance, the capital city of Scotland has a number of drawbacks, in addition to the numerous advantages it offers. Before making the move to Edinburgh, anyone migrating from another country will need to consider these factors.
The following is a list of some of the benefits and drawbacks of dwelling in Edinburgh.
The PROS:
1. Scottish people are so friendly
The Scots are known for being kind and welcoming individuals who are always eager to learn new things, and this is something that you will see the minute you set foot on Scottish land. When you first relocate to Edinburgh, you may find that you need a lot of assistance, and practically everyone you meet will volunteer to provide it for you, regardless of what they are currently engaged in.
In Scotland, you will often come into contact with a large number of individuals with whom you might develop friendly ties. The city of Edinburgh is hardly an exception. The folks are really polite and welcoming. You shouldn't have any trouble making new pals.
You are more likely to encounter individuals of a variety of racial and national backgrounds in Edinburgh due to the city's high level of cultural diversity. If you ask me, it is really wonderful.
Find a place where individuals from your home nation get together often and see if you can strike up a conversation with any of them if you're feeling homesick. Living in Edinburgh is sure to be a memorable and enjoyable experience for any visitor from outside the city.
2. Tourists Attractions
The precise year that Edinburgh was established is unknown; however, historians believe that it occurred sometime around the year 600 A.D. As a direct consequence of this, the city is home to a rich assortment of historically significant cultural landmarks. The most noticeable of them is Edinburgh Castle, which has been a prominent part of the skyline of the city since the Iron Age when it was first constructed as a hill stronghold.
Over a hundred parks and well over a half a million trees may be found throughout Edinburgh. Because of this, the city is naturally an ideal location for expats who like being outside. Even people who spend most of their time inside are likely to enjoy how verdant and beautiful the city remains throughout the year.
In particular with regard to issues of arts and culture, Edinburgh is a hive of activity. The city is well known around the globe as the location of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which holds the record for being the biggest arts festival ever held. In addition, there is the Edinburgh International Festival, which runs for three weeks and brings together musicians, dancers, actors, and other performers from all over the globe.
3. NHS coverage
In Edinburgh, foreign residents won't have any trouble gaining access to care of the highest possible standard. Moving to any location in the UK will get you access to the National Health Service, which is one of the most significant advantages of making the move. In Scotland, patients do not have to worry about paying out of pocket for any medical services or medicines.

Interesting & informative video, however there were some facts that are exaggerated, irrelevant or misleading. The NHS is not free to anyone coming to the UK for up to 6 months except for a few European countries & dental treatment will cost extra, if staying longer students for example have to pay £470 a year or get medical insurance. Edinburgh is NOT very expensive, only the property costs are really high just like any other desirable city but still far more affordable than the UK capital, if you use budget hotels outside of the peak tourist season, chain eateries and supermarkets, the prices are generally the same as the rest of the UK. Black taxis might still be the 2nd highest in the country, obviously services like Uber are a cheaper alternative and buses are only £ 1.80 for a single fare of any distance or £4.50 unlimited for a day !. The tv licence & council tax ( free to students ) is the same anywhere in the country and is not specific to Edinburgh, why is that included ?. As the UK's number 2 tourist destination, there are millions of visitors every year but only in the city centre, they help support the hundreds of amazing attractions this city has to offer. Edinburgh is very safe compared to larger cities, thankfully 'con artists' are very rare. I wouldn't call the city 'relatively tiny' at 16 km across but driving around the centre is best avoided due to endless roadworks and council restrictions. The weather is not that bad !, on average there is 237 days of no rain a year, it is more sunny with less rain in the East than the West of Scotland, being close to the sea the temperature rarely gets really hot or cold although the wind is fairly constant making it feel a bit colder at times.

You only need to pay a tv license if you watch live tv.
If you watch Netflix, Prime or Disney (amongst other streaming services) and not any live tv you don't need to pay for a license. I love in Scotland and havnt paid one in over 5 years (legally)

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is often a place where new acts such as a new comedian starting out and maybe wants to make him or herself that bit better known.

Edinburgh in August is ideal for that. Probably one of the biggest and best in the UK if not Europe for new acts or shows starting out.

As a foreigner that currently lives in the USA, I have made up my mind to settle down and have family in Scotland. I'm not much of a city dweller so I will more than likely live in the outer regions of Edinburgh.

They say very expensive but still cheaper than major cities of south England. That also means much more cheaper than London.

Rain doesn't last for a year, utter nonsense. Neither is it a small city. A beautiful capital and a vibrant place to live.

The Cons are a bit thin - TV license is UK wide, Small City is good - means you can escape to country side easily, Tourists - only on a few streets, the New town and Leith are great quite places to live. Pick pockets? Really! Pro's: Large and very diverse food scene. Wonderful Bar's off all types. Great Bus, train and tram travel around the City (Free if you're 60+). And most importantly a great City to walk around and feel safe and good about you and your kids.

Well folks l would pack all of your houses up and start seeking new accommodation to live in long term as long as the Scottish council and housing associations accept DHSS BENEFITS and housing benefits then you should make sure that the tenancies are long term and unfurnished and on a bus and team link for shops doctors surgeries and banks and hospitals and train links for commuting for work or colleges or universities or colleges

I live in Aotearoa NZ, Māori and native to this land, but man I love Edinburgh and so many other places in the UK and Europe. Like I actually cry when I think about Edinburghs beauty😭. But I’ll never get to go there, already lower class and struggling in my own country:/
