Surviving the Drake Passage Crossing to Antarctica (What it's REALLY like!)

Crossing the Drake Passage is one of the most notorious and exciting adventures available on the planet. Anyone who has ever considered a trip to Antarctica is posed with the singular question of whether they are up to the challenge. Or not.

It takes 2-3 days to cross the Drake Passage from Ushuaia, Argentina. You'll either have wild seas with big swings and high seas, nothing at all, or something in between.

It's an experience to be embraced, not feared. Enjoy the footage we captured during our crossing to Antarctica and be sure to also check out our detailed written account of the drake crossing, too:

For more information about visiting Antarctica be sure to check out our detailed travel section:

We hope our video has inspired you to Dream. Dare. Diverge.

I've only sailed through The Drake Passage once, and I don't think I'll be on a boat again any time soon. I was aware of the fact that there would be major changes in the currents and such, but seeing the water hit up against my window is enough to instill fear for the rest of my life.

Crossed Drake Passage 8 times from The Falklands to Antartica on the ship I was on in a 3 month period, when it is calm it is an amazing sight getting close to Antartica with the sea life and Icebergs, but when the waves get bad, seasickness and pray you make it safely!

What most non-sailors don’t know is that your average iphone, tablet, and/or camera visually flattens waves considerably, making huge waves seem much more tame. It’s really hard to capture the reality of a sea state……So when you see footage like this….multiply the wave heights by about four to understand how really bad it was!😬

What’s amazing is this was crossed by men in a 22 foot open boot in 1916

Did you experience a lot of stomach drop feeling, or is mainly rocking side to side? I’m so much more anxious of the former.

Haha, you two lying in bed looking very seasick brought back a lot of memories of our Drake Passage crossing in 2010 🤢

Transderm Scōp patches are very effective for motion sickness..{But I've not been on the Drake Passage with them, just the Irish Sea which can be rough at times}

I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a large stick, covered in thorns and on fire. 🔥

Get rid of that horrible music dude. Would’ve been better to hear the sounds of the ocean

I had to stop not even half way through, the stupid music is intolerable. I'll watch a real video about it.
