Alternatively, you could leave them as mixed numbers and use a binomial expansion instead of converting to improper fractions.

4⅙ × 2⅔ = (4 + ⅙)(2 + ⅔)
= 4(2 +⅔) + ⅙(2 + ⅔)
= 8 + ⁸/₃ + ²/₆ + ²/₁₈
= 8 + ⁸/₃ + ⅓ + ¹/₉
= 8 + ⁹/₃ + ¹/₉
= 8 + 3 + ¹/₉
= 11¹/₉
