two toed sloth gets mad at me

Apparently, in the wild, 3 toed sloths are very friendly, you can just pick one up. But two toed sloths can be very dangerous. The guide told a story about a dog, who was very friendly, and ran up barking excitedly to a 2 toed sloth, who promptly slashed it's throat with a single swipe of it's claws, and killed it. So be careful if you do see one. They have an amazing grip and are quite strong, so unless you are sure they are friendly I wouldn't advise letting it grab on to you. I was told in between the first and second shot that this sloth would bite and claw and no one should try to pet it... oops.

Who could blame the sloth for defending his boundaries? I would react very aggressively if people come too close, let alone if they would touch me. Moreover, he's trying to enjoy his meal, so leave him alone!

Most animals do not appreciate it if you bother them while they're eating (I've had first-hand experience from that with my cat.) Animals in general are very protective of their food source, as many have to fight to find food, when they do, they do not want to have it taken away. This is even true with domesticated animals as that is just wired into them, it's their nature. This is most likely why the sloth got defensive, as it wanted to make sure you weren't going to take it away from its food source. The sloth may have been perfectly friendly when it is not eating...

Umm... it's getting mad because you're messing with it while it's eating. Also it's not used to humans touching it... And I hardly believe that a sloth could be that dangerous to anything, and that slash of the throat, which is insane unless you were standing there for 10 minutes because that's how long it would take... I believe this story is SO untrue. They are literally one of the SLOWEST animals on the planet. A dog was barking in its face and with a dog not being a part of its natural environment, i'm sure it was scared!! Maybe it moved it claws... But slashing its throat PROMPTLY and killing it? Yeah... don't buy that for a second. Hope you didn't pay money to hear that story.

Yeah it was a tour of an animal rehabilitation refuge, they encouraged us to pet them, though they warned us to be careful with this one cause it could be moody.
