Textile Jacket Shredded in Slow Speed Crash - #83

After seeing so much shredded textile clothing, Starting to think denim holds up better. As some have pointed out, the lever tore the jacket not the slide. Still so much damage for a slow speed crash, rider had minor road rash on his chest and knee but was otherwise ok.

At 1:08 you can see his lever on the left side of the handle bars get caught in the jackets mid/upper pocket or air vent and then tear the jacket open before he rolls over and even touched the ground. This is not a Textile to tarmac test, it's a stress test across an open seam and I'm not surprised it tore.

Forget the jacket, how did the Red Nike shoes hold up? They seem to grip the road real good.

That is what we need: after-crash gear reviews. God bless the real life crash test dummies.

Looks like the handle bar/clutch lever dug into is jacket and caused the damage. I'm supprised how much damage it did though. Think I'll stick to leather!

DRZ holds up like a boss. To bad his jacket didnt. If you're going to use jeans when you ride you should put a Rhok between you and a hard place. Cough Cough

Definitely him putting his foot down. His peg didn't even catch until his foot was down.

1:05 his nice red street shoes catch the ground and cause the crash, keep the balls of your feet on the pegs not the heels of your feet people ! I have also hurt my feet in a crash, you can walk after due to adrenaline but dont! this guy will not be able to walk the next day he is lucky that foot wasn't broken

I still believe in textile after this, there is cheap and crappy and decent armoured textile at the end of the day it did its job and saved his skin unlike his jeans, thats basically what jackets are for let them be destroyed and save you the pain of skin graphs. anyway i've seen stupider crashes on here hope the guy is ok and gets back on the bike soon

edit: this guy would have still crashed but i'm a huge fan of proper riding boots (the kind that goes half way up your shin). Having near broken both ankles in a 50-60kph crash wearing steel toe caterpillar's I (highly) recommend proper riding boots ~and heck riding boots are sexy ive had more compliments in them than cat's (just keep some black shoes at work if you ride daily)

if you watch the slow motion closely you'll notice that his jacket ant shirt are ripped by his left handlebar. it wasn't due to the skidding on the asphalt

the vented area ripped but the impact zones on shoulders and elbows did their job.

This was an Icon compound mesh jacket. The part that ripped was the mesh. The leather on the arms held up in this crash and the rider seems to have walked away without collarbone or arm fractures so the armor did its job as well. Icon does not sell this product anymore and when it did it was clear in the description that the mesh was not the same as their other textile and would offer less protection.

Just watch the video a few times.. the textile doesn't rip from sliding, infact that particular area doesn't touch the ground but for one roll. the jacket was too small for him, and when he rolled it ripped the jacket by his arm folding. now.... understandable a jacket should be able to hold. but that jacket looks REALLY tight on him, and there's no telling how old it is. if you go full HD and look at the jacket where spots didn't rip/touch the material is still frayed, Implying the jacket is old, and the material is weak, but will still resist friction tear, not force tear.

0:15 motorcycle did not like the red shoes and decided to drop him off, and with that weight any jacket would shred !

Its always strange about the textile and leather debate, a GOOD quality and well stitched textile will protect as well as leather for a short slide BUT the disadvantage with textiles is they grip the tarmac more and you can end up rolling and thus breaking bones at high speed. ICON gear looks nice but common its erm... shit.

Old but useful to see as regardless of the textile/leather debate this was a real world scenario and there are many things that can hook a pocket or vent. Would you rather be dragged farther down the road by your 500-900 lbs bike or released?

As for the crash it was just a lack of technic. Lean bike, lean body, weight back, equals weight on the inside peg, light front, and a tuck is eminent. Hang off and keep bike upright like the sport bike peeps, or weight forward, upright torso, lean bike, weight the outside peg, and inside foot off the peg motocross style. Many of us have dragged pegs and the inside food but because the peg is spring loaded and your inside foot isn't weighted it shouldn't take you down. We are always learning so no disrespect to the rider at all.

Good ole icon gear! Atleast you look cool in cheap gear

I wouldn't say this demonstrates the inferiority of textiles as much as the inferiority of inferior products. You can find leather products with weak seams as easily as textiles...spend some cash on your gear.

it wasn't the peg, it was his duck foot! if he had any idea about body position his bike wouldn't have been leaned over half that far going that speed. 😂

"The peg touched" nah man, your whole foot got caught on the road
