Is ProtonMail Safe? Under Fire After Logging IP's!

Today I’ll be looking at is ProtonMail safe, after they have drawn criticism after they yielded to a legal request and shared IP addresses with law enforcement authorities, leading to arrests in France.

They've originally stated: "No personal information is required to create your secure email account. By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. Your privacy comes first." Now, they have updated their privacy policy to explicitly state that it will be forced to log users' IP addresses if they are found in violation of Swiss laws.

Just a quick note, I do think that this was a pretty suspicious move by ProtonMail. I'm pretty disappointed in this development though, and curious to see if they lose customers and clients after this. However, again I think people that are not using this service for illegal purposes should not be affected by this change in their policies.

I'll still use Proton, just because it still works for me. I think people just need to have common sense with digital matters. I always assume even if they say "it's 100% secure", it's not. None of it is. It's probably as secure as it can be on their end, but obviously if you do something stupid... Well, they don't want to be liable.

Great video. In my view, and this is unpopular in some corners of the web ... I completely understand the motivation and the idea of getting on alternate platforms to communicate and further our individual messages ... but how far down the road are we going to kick the can? How many platforms will we monkey-branch to? We need a viable plan to unify and take action now instead of kicking it down the line to the next platform, then the next, then the next. When Jesus was told to move along by the Romans, he didnt run, he went to the center of town. No, I don’t have all the answers, but if we put half the energy into talking about possible plans of action as we do making sure we have the next platform to go to, we’d probably have a viable plan of action by now.

You would probably be more secure if you use proton mail using the Tails operating system on a public network.

VPN + TOR before log in would definitely kick it up a notch.
