this was extremely useful, much less work than the idea i was having
Now I've just got to figure out how to make this work for irregular shapes...

I'm just getting the edges to show up by doing it like this. I have a box with rounded edges, when I do this I just get a sphere (which also stretches when I change the shape). What's going on?

Edit: Never mind, I just had to set pixels per unit equal to the image size. Thanks for the tutorial! :)

The real problem is ui's position on screen.

can you do this with a regular object?

What if you need the sides to remain a constant height (i.e. say you have a Snake circling up the sides that can't be stretched).. if you already know the Unity panel height, is there any way to determine the correct canvas size to be used when creating the original image if pixel density remains at 1 (for stretchable width) or am i SOL? I tried creating as 1:1 but it made the pixels look really tiny.. I figure the canvas has gotta be made in some proportion of the panel dimensions so it scales up adequately without losing the sides, but also needs to reflect the 1 pixel density..
