Ottawa limiting international student permits

As the federal government reduces the number of international study permits nationwide, questions about what it could mean for B.C.'s post-secondary institutions are emerging. As CBC's Jon Hernandez reports, the province has become a popular destination for international students.

I worked as a part time instructor at a private college. They took any student as long as they have the money. They bragged over 90% of their student get jobs out of school. I ran into an old student and he told me the school count ANY job. If they get a minimum job completely unrelated to what they studied, they’d still count it. In reality, hardly any students got a job in the field they studied for. Big scam.

It's disgusting that gov allowed this to happen in the first place. No housing no plans just double, triple and more students coming every year. Finally it reached the limit of this madness. Not every student can support their cost of living in Canada, they need put way tighter requirement.

These schools are making so much money it's insane. They're almost all international students and their able to charge four times average tuition.

I think it's a good move. We went from ~100, 000 foreign students to ~400, 000 in only a few years. Students put a big strain on low cost housing. It's only one part of the issue, but adding nearly 300, 000 foreign students that quickly is a shock to a lot of things all at once.

Apparently, some foreign students are being instructed before arriving in Canada on how to access social services and food banks to lower their costs. So, they don't give a damn about the Canadians who need help, why should Canadians give a damn about them. For once, good for the government.

A majority of international students are just here to get their permanent residency (This is coming from someone who has dated IS and is friends with a bit)

I think this will directly target Indian students since the proportion of other countries coming to Canada isn't that significant. It's very demotivating for students to come to school in Canada and all their classmates are Indians. It's like they're going to school in India.

Going to university these days, you wouldn't even think that you are in Canada. Nice people and all but there is clearly an extreme # of foreign students and something is way off.

Biggest problem is that international students can bring their spouse.parents and siblings on visitor visa while they are on study permits.many international students bring their spouse over started having kids while they are on work permits or study permits.

Canada still welcomes international students, as long as they are truly here to learn and become professionals who plan to develop their careers in Canada, this is why the policy changes does not apply to graduate level degrees like Masters, PhDs or any skill proficient programs. This change is mainly to eliminate the easy going green card farmers who came for the work permit, work for 2 years so they can get PR and start bringing their relatives. It’s about time to cut these unwanted redundant weights off

Federal government need to restrict visitor visa as everyone enter in this country and applying for refugee visa and taking shelter in our homeless shelters.refugee claim spikes in canada like crazzy due to relax in visitor visa rules.stop this mess as canadians are suffering.

Great move. They should first revamp education and monitor tuition fees. Students pay hefty fees, learn nothing, work part time for 40 hrs and when they graduate find it hard to build their career. This is has been happening for so long. There are so many colleges opening up with just one building and mba related courses.

2-year cap on student permits to 360, 000 for 2024. We know that 2/3 of these students leave Canada once their schooling is done.
Q Why no talk about reducing the 500, 000 immigration numbers for '24 and '25?
A: Immigrant votes
