Brexiteers Panic At Prospect of EU Youth Mobility Scheme

Brexiteers are once again sounding the alarm over the prospect of a youth mobility deal with the EU, even though we have similar schemes with other countries around the world. So what are they really afraid of?

Frenchman here. When I was just about to finish my education (Electrician Engineer) I was thrilled to travel all over Europe (hitch hicking) in Youth hotels / Jungendherberge / Auberges de Jeunesse. I also spent 3 months in Germany for my "Stage ouvrier" / "Arbeiterpraktikum" / Worker internship just prior to getting an Engineer diploma. It gave me a feeling of freedom and I went to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands. This is to say that if I was in the shoes of a young Briton, I would fight for it. Our country is Europe. It helps tremendously to decide for your future career and where to work. I ended up working for French companies (Dassault, Thales, ..) but almost exclusively for export to the USA, Canada, China, the UK, the Neterlands. Yes that was 55 years ago but I believe nothing has changed here (the need to discover).

I was in the last cohort of UK students to go on an Erasmus+ mobility as part of my modern languages degree and it was a life-changing experience for me. It was a horrendous, completely unnecessary, and purely ideological decision by the Conservative Government to leave Erasmus as we could have remained a member even without being EU members. The Turing scheme and bilateral schemes with individual counties such as Spain are no replacement for Erasmus.

Love the idea that the response to the gammon army saying this is a return to Freedom of Movement is to say "Hey, don't worry, it's alright, YOU're not getting your Freedom of Movement back"!

The youths cant travel in Europe but the rich can retire to Spain and France, so that's ok then.

I was at Schiphol (NL) airport recently. Luckily I have an EU passport & was allowed use the E-passport gate & I was through in no time, whereas 3rd country passport queue was what felt like a mile long, I'd say at least an hour in the queue. It must be nerve-racking!

One of the Heil's BTLers irritatedly asked if a similar scheme could be introduced for the over-60s. It was pointed out that one had existed but that he'd voted to remove it.
