So, for most of us, it is not the car to own. I suppose it’s popularity as a collector car will largely be based on future availability and affordability of the software. It will either age to the point that it becomes worthless for BMW to bother with trying to legally protect it from being cloned and released to the mass market or BMW might go to great pains to vault it. Historically, when their cars age to the point that most of the old model’s new owners are not their traditional customer base and the models are no longer worth the cost of their dealer service departments (no longer profitable), they really don’t care about them anymore. But, since the M3/5 cars are a reasonably low production car with a history of becoming a quick collectable, they may see dollar signs? I can see BMW taking a page from Ford’s book and developing some sort of certified M car reproduction parts and service division ... just so they continue to profit from everything M no matter how old the cars get ... or maybe I am just that out of the loop and they already have?

Really looking forward to seeing more on the 1600!

Many of these cars have gone to 150k miles with no rod bearings ...these cars are special and you have to take of them,
Nathan keep up the good work.
And telling people how it is.

I have the SMG in my E46, and I know it gets a ton of complaints, but I kinda enjoy it. I usually have my shift point set at 4 of 6 & just leave it there. The only issues I've ever experienced are more of a lurching nature at slow speeds, in-town driving, but even that is extremely limited.

I personally would have went for the E39 M5 but I know thay are more expensive as they are more reliable, less complicated, manual box, no rod bearing issues, more collectable and future classic. I hope I get one some day 😊

Great video I have a e92 m3 for 2 years best car I have ever had. Did the rod bearing soon as I had it cost me just over £600 for the bit's from BMW I decided to get OEM bearing's. The only problem I have had it the passenger mirror forgets its position.

people keep saying rod bearings ...but most second owners and third owners have beat these cars.
When you buy these type of cars you have to warm up before you jump on it.

High powered N/A engines have tighter tolerances so required greater maintenance

Agree! How you drive it makes a difference on how good it holds up. Beet the shit out of it and you fix a lot more. True with all cars. I personally love my bimmers and the best cars I have owned but I don't beet on them. Easy to work on to. If I get into something crazy, and can't figure it out, I have the best indi BMW mechanic in MPLS that is very reasonable and worth the 3 hr drive. My Z4 was a mess when I bought it and he found the $50 dollar switch in the steering column that was the problem.

Here in Australia the sun just destroys anything approaching red. Something to do with the red pigment. Top coat can take a beating too. Looking forward to this one! 👍

The thing is, if you maintain and take care of it, you have a gem compared to 90% of the rest of the same models out there. The only reason the values of these cars falls so much is that most people either do not maintain them, or they spend tons of money having hit or miss maintenance items done my shops that either do not know what they are doing, or don't care. I learned to work on my own cars after I realized that doing it myself meant I could do it right myself (which sometimes took a long time to make sure I was doing it right) Over the years you realize that these things are Not so difficult and they all build your confidence and knowledge. A lot of "issues" with BMW's are common items that occur in other models, so each time you learn how to do these things you can do them quicker, better, and cheaper the next time! I take pride when I'm driving my unreliable BMW's and someone is blown away that there are no lights on that shouldn't be!

Wonderful car to drive and sounds so good. Just needs maintenance and constant attention

Well I guess that eliminates 99% I want to be owners

I always really thought as long as you have a budget, do the major preventative maintenance, and don’t constantly beat the shit out of the car you should be relatively fine.

you have to do your I bought an 06 one, but it was a california car imported into Canada. The previous owner replaced the engine at 100, 000 Km. a Troy Jeup built 600 Hp engine that was 14, 000 USD. when the motor was out everything was gone through and dealt with front to back. He gave me all records and paperwork. I paid 18, 000 Canadian(about 12, 000 US).

Buy bimmergeeks protool it does enough to help fix any issues with any newer BMW. You don't need ISTA

Good video, but Looks like you need to turn off continuous focus on your camera. It's focus breathing really badly. Or maybe its the aperture? Set your camera to manual mode so settings aren't changing and change auto focus modes to something that doesn't go so crazy.

Nathan, thank you. I now know I don't qualify to own the E60 M5. :( Well, on to the E86 Z4M Coupe.
