Learning a language is useful. On so many levels. But here's the problem. Schools don't teach them successfully. The ENTIRE language learning curriculum of the Western world is completely defunct and completely detached from what the research on language acquisition shows. Even the students who achieve the highest grades can barely string a sentence together and can't understand native content at all. And its not surprising. Language lessons are still typically delivered in english with lengthy and pointless grammatical explanations with little or no access to native content and without the most important instruction of all- that learners should be listening to the language when out of lessons all the time like their life depends on it.

So if you're wondering whether to take a language option or not, you should do it. 100%. But don't think your lessons will give that to you, however hard you try. Find out how independent language learners have successfully learned languages in their own homes.

I don’t know whether to do french or latin. I know that both are technically languages but I guess latin is a dead language not a modern foreign language like french so should I do french or latin because I enjoy latin more and I hate french, I’ll probably get a C or a B if I’m very lucky in french compared to an A or a B if I’m unlucky in latin but the point is french will be much worse than latin would be and than my other subjects will be so is there any point doing it? I’m not going to pursue either of them to a-level btw. I mean I’ve heard people say that universities love latin but I’ve also heard people say that some universities really want you to have done a modern foreign language. I’ve already sorted out all my other options and I can only do one language so I can’t do both. At the moment I am thinking about doing maths, psychology and history for a-level and doing law at university that makes a difference, but that could easily change. Also I’m really not planning to have anything to do with France, I don’t want to work there and I don’t plan to go on holiday there, perhaps once but that’s it. Advice?

now that I am in Y10, I'm not sure if I want to drop French, I'm wanting to learn a language as its a goal of mine too learn 2 others before i am 20. However the teacher i now is not the best and i no longer enjoy it. I'm struggling to pick any of the information up and i honestly dread everyday i have to attend that lesson, ( it doesn't help that i have a double period with her). id drop it however our school has drilled it into our head that if we don't have a language GCSE that no collages or University will take us. and tbh I didn't even want French, I would have taken Spanish however apparently Spanish being the 3rd most spoken language in the world isn't a good enough reason for me to take it. would it be worth me taking French? and if i dont will it ruin my chances of getting into collage?

IF YOUR IN YEAR 8/9 CHOOSING UR GCSES DONT TAKE A LANGUAGE SAVE YOURSELF. trust me its such a stupid idea, ur only learning the language at such a basic level its literally useless. unis dont even view it that well and even if your obsessed with learning a language there are so many better ways to do it (with certifications), much faster and much less stress on yourself when u reach year 11 lmao. legit u will forget most of it after year 11 and the way its taught isnt even useful. you will find urself revising for the exam rather than learning a language. its a trap i swear these teachers bs u with how its important but ur not even learning it to such level departments just want more funding and students and its not taught in a good way. by far my biggest mistake at gcse. if u just want a easy subject i recommend gcse business, its easy asf and so fun trust me. u can get a 9 easily in it. just dont pick a language for gcse or u will regret it i swear
