Alicent basically said to Viserys that she thinks Rhae's sons are illegitimate and he said nothing. Viserys was a whole chump.

One of my favorite parts of this scene is how scared and unsettled Alicent seems. She's been needled and twisted by Otto so far that even when Rhaenyra proposes a good (if very Targaryen) solution to healing the rift, she immediately jumps to "she's desperate, she wants to marry my daughter to a bastard out of spite, she wants to be able to remove my sons from the field and hold my daughter as a hostage to keep me from retaliating". You can see, based on the mannerisms with her hands (which both actresses used as a tic on purpose) that she is uncomfortable and scared.
She is not reading the situation accurately and she is acting out of fear to such a degree that she cannot see the best way forward and it bites her. Hard.

I never understood why the writer wrote the situation like this. As misogynistic as Westerosi society was, why wasn't the king stepping in and saying "Yes, this is good, Jace is marrying Helena, period. No complaining. I'm king, and my word is law." Yes, Alicent is queen, but she's not the sitting monarch. Wouldn't a King have the last word in everything, especially with family/succession issues?

This wise and diplomatic offer would have been perfect - if Laenor had found some way to actually sire children with Rhaenyra. If not, the best option remaining would be that Corlys Valerion - in sworn secrecy - do so.

Rhaenyra’s biggest mistake was giving birth to three bastards. alicent would have accepted, had her children been purely Targaryen-Velaryon but she was not about to marry her child off to a bastard.
