What up gang, real excited to show you this shoot. We shot this back in 2015, I'm just getting around to putting this tutorial together. I'll show you how I used High Speed Sync to get this dramatic look with Body Builder Deo. And my son Omari decided to make a guest appearance. Shout out to Omari.

Leave some feedback and let me know if this was helpful to you.

Nice explanation, I am stuck with Einstein too but lucky for me also have nice variable neutral ND filter as well. The high speed sync seems to be the way to go though. Very nice work, great model. Love your baby too!!!! Yawns too cute.

All this was FIYA!!! I'm just starting out with HSS. I will continue to learn & practice! Thanks for the education and inspiration!

There is high speed sync and there is hypersync--two entirely different technologies. Hypersync is older and it's basically a clever kludge that takes advantage of a technical FAULT common to older flash technology. Basically, older flashes don't "turn off" the light as sharply as would be ideal.

Ideally, an electronic flash would hit peak brightness instantly, dump all its light in one pop, and then cut off instantly. But older flash units actually kind of dribbled for a while after hitting their peak (a "tail" in a graph). That "dribble" causes blur in really fast motion, which is why it's not a good thing.

But PocketWizard figured out how to use the tail. They gave their triggers a setting to pop the flash an instant later so that the shutter missed the peak and opened during the tail of the flash, which--in some older flash designs like Alien Bees--was just long enough to provide a usable exposure while the focal plane shutter was traversing the sensor. PocketWizard calls this clever kludge "Hypersync."

But modern flash units are designed closer to ideal: Hit peak, dump fast, cut off fast. The good thing is that they're excellent at stopping motion. But they have little or no tail for the PocketWizard Hypersync kludge to work with.

High Speed Sync (HSS) is a totally different concept. In HSS, it's that flash itself that does the trick. The flash pulses during the shutter release so that it puts out light the entire time the shutter is traversing the sensor. Sometimes you can see the separate pulses in the image as bars across the image at the really high shutter speeds.

So Hypersync is a trigger trick that requires old-school flash units. HSS is a trick of the flash itself, and you need a flash designed to do it.

Unfortunately, Paul C. Buff, Inc. has not yet produced a flash with HSS capabilities. I've been keeping my fingers crossed, but I fear the late Paul Buff himself was the innovation engine for the company--all the circuit designs came right out of his head.

Hi There!
Set the 622C to Super-Sync. It looks like "55" on the screen. It basically fires the flash and allows exposure on the after-burn of the flash. It will drop the power of your flash but it does the job ;-) In the FN-01-Setting you can adjust the time between flash-fire and exposure to fine-tune. If you have bright spots, turn the time higher, but keep it as low as possible.
