written by Joni Mitchell | produced by Joni Mitchell & Larry Klein | from the album Night Ride Home (1991) | video directed by Rocky Schenck | vhs transfer by sonicboy19 |

Back in 1957
We had to dance a foot apart
And they hawk-eyed us from the sidelines
Holding their rulers without a heart
And so with just a touch of our fingers
We could make our circuitry explode
All we ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

I feel your leg under the table
Leaning into mine
I feel renewed
I feel disabled
By these bonfires in my spine
I don't know who the arsonist was
Which incendiary soul
But all I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

I am not some stone commission
Like a statue in a park
I am flesh and blood and vision
I am howling in the dark
Long blue shadows of the jackals
Are falling on a pay phone by the road
Oh, all they ever wanted
Was to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

i haven't stopped listening (and crying along) to this song for the last three days. it speaks on so many levels like only real art can. joni is a poet. this is a masterpiece.

I was 19 when I got this album in 1991, before I met my wife. Much older now, kids all grown up and back to where I was in 1991; alone, but listening to the same song. Now there's a revolving circle.

This is music from Heaven, there can be no other explanation.

Great song on one of her best albums, Night Ride Home.

My daughter was born to this song this past February. It meant so much before her birth, and certainly means the world now.

I can’t believe I have only just discovered this gem. I bought Hits years ago and this track is tucked away near the end. It’s a lovely soulful song. Joni Mitchell at her best.

I always heard about the legendary Joni Mitchell's name but i never tried to get into her music. I heard e very Artist mention her as the best musician, best songwriter, as a pioneer. But then randomly came here, and it was the best thing I've done in years, now I can't stop, I only have 30yo but right now am listening all her catalog. Now I understand why everyone named as the best and most influential Artist among Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

Just another one of Joni Mitchell's beautiful songs. Beautiful voice, beautiful music, beautiful lyrics.

This song is just amazing. Great lyrics, Joni's wonderful vocals and her wonderfully rhythmic guitar.

This video, shown on MTV when the album "Night Ride Home" was released in 1991 when I was 16, was my introduction to Joni. The dreamlike sound, the combination of world-weariness with a kind of weathered innocence, and the eloquence of a popular musician using the word "incendiary" capitvated me.

I heard this song for the first time at 1992 with my ex girlfriend. I come here many times. I don't know whether to listen to Joni or remember her or both. <3

Back in 1957
We had to dance a foot apart
And they hawk-eyed us from the sidelines
Holding their rulers without a heart
And so with just a touch of our fingers
I could make our circuitry explode
All we ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(we were so young)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

We really thought we had a purpose
We were so anxious to achieve
We had hope
The world held promise
For a slave to liberty
Freely I slaved away for something better
And I was bought and sold
And all I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(we were so sure)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

I feel your leg under the table
Leaning into mine
I feel renewed
I feel disabled
By these bonfires in my spine
I don't know who the arsonist was
Which incendiary soul
But all I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(you were so warm)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

I am not some stone commission
Like a statue in a park
I am flesh and blood and vision
I am howling in the dark
Long blue shadows of the jackals
Are falling on a pay phone by the road
Oh all they ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(I was so low)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

Is this just vulgar electricity
Is this the edifying fire
(it was so pure)
Does your smile's covert complicity
Debase as it admires
(just a flu with a temperature)
Are you just checking out your mojo
(oohoo)
Or am I just fighting off growing old
(just a high fever)
All I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(it was so pure)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

I know we never will be perfect
Never entirely clear
(when the moon shines)
We get hurt and we just panic
And we strike out
Out of fear
(you were only being kind)
I fear the sentence of this solitude
200 years on hold
(for my loving crime)
Oh and all we ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(when the moon shines)
Oh come in
Come in from the cold

When I thought life had some meaning
Then I thought I had some choice
(I was running blind)
And I made some value judgments
In a self-important voice
(I was outa line)
But then absurdity came over me
And I longed to lose control
(into no mind)
Oh all I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold

Come in
Come in from the cold
(you were so kind)
Please come in
(so kind)
Come in from the cold
Come in come in
Come in from the cold, etc.

I was in my final year at university, I’d fallen badly in love a year earlier I had just broken up, dropped many so called friends and threw myself into my studies crying and listening to this masterpiece over and over
